Do you have enough savings set aside in case of an emergency? Our wealth planner Kelli Smith sheds light on why it’s important for every household to have the right financial safety net, particularly for single-income families facing a job loss. A robust emergency fund isn’t just smart—it’s essential. Are you prepared for the unexpected? Daniel de Visé explores this crucial topic in USA TODAY. Read more below. ⬇️
Many Americans struggle with emergency savings. It’s hard to even get started, let alone to amass the three to six months of household expenses we are instructed to save. Investopedia, the financial media site, has a new report that sheds light on how much emergency savings we really need. The good news: We now have a hard number to aim for. The bad news: It’s a large number. A typical U.S. household should have at least $33,000 saved for an emergency, Investopedia reports: $33,110.68, to be exact. That sum represents roughly four times the amount of money the typical household has in its combined savings and checking accounts, a comparatively paltry $8,329, according to federal data. “That should be a wakeup call for people,” said Caleb Silver, editor in chief of Investopedia, on the struggle to save for an emergency. “If you think savings are going to get you out of it, you have to have enough savings to get through it.” Here's the full story, also featuring Kelli Smith, CFP®, CRPC® of Edelman Financial Engines and Greg McBride, CFA of Bankrate.
How much should I have in my emergency fund? More than you think.

According to EY findings shared at the National LGBT Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC) conference, the costs of ignoring inclusion comprise of $4.2M in turnover costs, lost access to 10M Gen Z workers, and lost opportunity with consumers. To stay competitive, companies need to rise to the occasion by focusing on Business/Employee Resource Groups (BRGs/ERGs), allyship, benefits and wellness, inclusive recruitment strategies, and increased reporting and accountability. “I was honored to represent Edelman Financial Engines at the NGLCC Conference and sit on Rex Wilde’s panel 'How ERGs can leverage Supplier Diversity and LGBTBEs to support Transgender + Gender Expansive Employees.' I could not be prouder to work for an inclusive employer who celebrates the diversity of its employees and creates a safe working space to be our authentic selves. And to be selected to attend an event as a representative of my firm centered around promoting LGBTQ+ voices was not something I would’ve ever imagined. It’s been truly an amazing experience!” shared Marcus Bufford, Edelman Financial Engines, Out & Allies ERG Leader and Director, Financial Reporting & Technical Accounting. “My favorite part about the conference is seeing how it connects smaller LGBTQ+ owned businesses with larger corporations through matchmaking and networking events to help get the smaller business a chance to compete with the big players. The smaller companies are able to grow their business while the larger corporations are diversifying their suppliers and helping DE&I metrics.” Marcus shared in an interview with NBC Palm Springs/KMIR.
