Transforming Lives, Restoring Hope
About us
Edgewood Center for Children and Families is a nonprofit provider of behavioral health, family support, and educational services that touch the lives of thousands of children, youth, and families in San Francisco and San Mateo counties each year. Founded in 1851 in San Francisco, Edgewood is the oldest children’s charity in the Western U.S. and has become recognized nationally as a multifaceted agency that transforms lives and restores hope for children and families. We believe a holistic approach to behavioral health can transform the lives of children, youth and their families. Taking a family-centered and integrated approach, our work focuses on issues such as mental health, family relationships and life skills. What guides us is our belief in every child we serve and our values of engaging families, developing community, generating hope and embracing diversity. We are proud to have a positive impact on 7,000 children and families every year, and in our efforts to continuously improve outcomes more broadly through our research and training programs.

One year after arriving in San Francisco in 1853, Levi Strauss donated some of his first profits to the San Francisco Protestant Orphan Asylum (later called Edgewood). It was the city's first children's service agency. Today, Edgewood continues working with children, supporting their mental health needs. I was fortunate to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of their current campus. Congratulations Edgewood Center for Children and Families and thanks for doing such important work!

Today is World Mental Health Day. At a time when 1 in 6 U.S. youth aged 6-17 experiences a mental health condition each year, it is important to raise awareness about mental health and help youth find resources that promote their wellness. Today, and every day of the year, Edgewood is committed to being the place for Bay Area youth and families to find the care they need in support of their mental health and well-being.

We honor Willie Mays' legacy as a trailblazing athlete, generous philanthropist, and community leader. In addition to providing support to Edgewood Center through his Say Hey Foundation for many years, he regularly made it possible for our youth and program staff to attend San Francisco Giants games. He also met with them when attending games and took an interest in visiting with each child and teen to learn about their interests and dreams. We honor his legacy and commitment to providing youth positive opportunities and safer communities.

The Second Annual Edgewood Open is just over a week away! Join in for tennis or pickleball games to benefit Edgewood’s Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU). The CSU provides 24/7/365 medical access and protection for children experiencing self-harm and mental health emergencies. It is the only one of its kind in San Francisco, where an average of 88% of youth admitted are diverted from traumatic inpatient psychiatric care. Space is limited, so get your tickets early! https://lnkd.in/dBjtrT2X

Thank you to Edgewood Board Member Carrie Johnson for her energetic and creative efforts to raise awareness and support our programs. In March, she was an exhibitor at the 58th Edgewood Fair with her hand-made quilts, which the guests purchased and were delivered as comfort items for youth served by our Crisis Stabilization Unit. Carrie is now coordinating our second Edgewood Open, which will include tennis and pickleball to raise funds for the Crisis Stabilization Unit. Join us on Saturday, June 8th, for a day of fun that will support the life-saving services of the Edgewood Crisis Stabilization.
