The cost of college is an enormous barrier to many students’ postsecondary dreams. While federal financial aid will continue to be crucial, there is also a major opportunity for STATE leaders to use their own financial aid programs to expand postsecondary access and success. Because they can move more quickly and nimbly than the federal government, state leaders are uniquely positioned to develop financial aid programs that are specifically suited to their populations and workforce goals. Equitable access to high-value, career connected learning has many positive benefits for students, including the ability to secure higher-paying jobs after graduation and an increased confidence that they will be successful in the job market. In fact, nearly 90% of students and families want diverse pathways toward careers. On the other side of the education-to-workforce paradigm, employers understand the need to develop their future talent pipeline and diversify their workforce and are interested in providing virtual opportunities for groups or individual learners as a first step in this direction. And yet, we have not seen a major push to strengthen the connection between our education and employer talent systems; with the exception of those states and communities that are investing in “Education-to-career pathway intermediaries.” The latest Forbes column from Matt Gandal looks at how state and local governments are leveraging these opportunities to strengthen talent pipelines, and why we should scale this model nationwide. https://lnkd.in/g2sHwTtM

From the Zoom grid to the in-person group shot! Our team is feeling energized and grateful after gathering in Atlanta, Georgia for a few days last week. We're looking forward to connecting with many of you and continuing to dig into our work together as we head into the home stretch of 2024.

Some of the most highly regarded education systems in the world feature strong and dexterous connections between schools and employers; but in the U.S., disconnection between education and employer talent systems is too often the norm. Fortunately, there are emergent bright spots in communities across the country that are bucking that status quo; and often, at the center of the change are “education-to-career pathway intermediaries” that are bringing together disparate actors from K-12 education, higher education, and industry employers around a common vision. My latest column in Forbes highlights Education Strategy Group’s latest research on intermediaries and argues that the best way to build this important muscle in America will be through public-private partnerships.
