🎉 Congratulations to our D.C. Education Research Collaborative partners for receiving a $3M grant from the U.S. Department of Education's Institute of Education Sciences (IES)! This four-year project will explore career development opportunities in District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) (DCPS) to ensure equitable access to high-quality programs like career academies, internships, and apprenticeships. Led by a team of experts from the D.C. Policy Center, Georgetown University, and the Urban Institute, this research will provide valuable insights to help DCPS middle and high school students thrive in the region's high-wage job market. CityWorks DC is proud to have supported this important initiative and looks forward to learning from the findings. 🔗 Read more about the announcement here: https://lnkd.in/erX33vzX #DCPS #CareerDevelopment #StudentSuccess #EquityInEducation #CityWorksDC #Opportunity4All

🌟 Partner Spotlight: District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) 🌟 DCPS has been an invaluable partner of CityWorks DC from Day 1, and our work together is ever-expanding. Anchored by Glenn Starnes II (DCPS Senior Deputy Chief for SEAD Strategy) and supported by Crystal Smith (DCPS Director, Career Preparedness Programs), Kristen DeSanti(DCPS Manager, Career Preparedness Programs), and their team, we work with DCPS in multiple ways, two of which are highlighted below. DCPS is one of the most active participants in our Hire Local DC Sector Partnerships. In addition to Phelps ACE, two new DCPS Schools, Luke C. Moore Opportunity Academy and Garnet-Patterson STAY, have joined the DC Builds DC Construction Sector Partnership. Kristen DeSanti, Manager of Career Preparedness Programs at DCPS, has led Job Readiness sessions for DCPS students and alumni preparing for Hire Local DC Hiring Events. This summer, she and her team presented to all college and career school-based staff the Construction and Hospitality Job Readiness Rubrics as a part of the DCPS College & Career Institute. DCPS has also shown outstanding engagement with our apprenticeship programs - we're particularly excited to have five new DCPS apprentices this fall! Jubei, a 2022 graduate of McKinley Tech and 2024 graduate of the CareerWise DC apprenticeship in cybersecurity, is now working full-time at Accenture. He spoke as an alumni panelist at DCPS's College & Career Institute about the power and impact of his apprenticeship experience and how he would encourage school staff to recommend apprenticeship for students (on the right in the photo!) We're excited to spotlight District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) as we work together to expand student career pathways and opportunities.

This expansion builds off the success of a pilot program that has placed 110 DC residents in roles with Sector Partnership employers, which include Donohoe Hospitality Services, Levy Restaurants, Marriott Hotels, Clyde's Restaurant Group, and Events DC.
