Menopause care is a necessity, not a nice-to-have. Yet the prevailing narrative too often presents it as a privilege, accessible only to those who can afford it. This must change. To address this dissonance, we need widespread reform, including: ✔️ More clinicians trained in menopause participating in Medicaid ✔️ Policy alignment to incentivize broader access to high-quality menopause care ✔️ Expanded use of digital health platforms to overcome geographical barriers ✔️ Increased focus on community education Thank you to Jennifer Weiss-Wolf for facilitating the opportunity for Elektra’s Co-Founder & CEO Jannine Versi and Chief Medical Officer Nora Lansen, MD to speak on this important topic. https://lnkd.in/gRUuvsCB

On the latest episode of the Springbuk podcast, Elektra's Chief Medical Officer Nora Lansen, MD sat down with David Pittman and Brittany E. Hardaway, MOL, MBA to discuss the critical need for employers to provide menopause support in the workplace. Key takeaways: - Menopause is a long-term journey, not just a single moment, affecting women for 20-25 years - Common menopausal symptoms like brain fog and memory issues can significantly impact work performance - Many women feel unsupported by their employers during menopause - Employers can benefit from supporting menopausal employees, who are often at the prime of their careers - Addressing menopause care can help prevent other health issues that become more prevalent during midlife 🎧 Listen here: https://lnkd.in/ecqmsQR8 #worldmenopausemonth #menopauseintheworkplace

While diagnosing menopause is relatively straightforward, determining whether or not you are in perimenopause is less clear. Oova surveyed 700 women across the United States to share their perimenopause experiences. This report provides a comprehensive overview of their perspectives on symptoms, treatment options, societal expectations, and the need for support. https://lnkd.in/gmUFFeU6
Bringing women's health - from menopause to Medicare - into the 21st century. Because women deserve better.
“I feel like I am not taken as seriously as I was during the years I was growing my family.” “This is scary and lonely.” “They don’t care.” This is a sample of responses from Oova's recent report about the social and emotional impact of perimenopause – the hormonal rollercoaster years before menopause onset. The report, which was compiled from interviews with 700 women across the United States, is a sobering reminder that women are feeling unseen, unheard, and unsupported. And we have to do better. Thank you to Aparna (Amy) Divaraniya, PhD and the entire Oova team for producing this in-depth report with insights, statistics, and…most importantly…solutions for women navigating perimenopause. Menopause is seemingly everywhere: the focus of an executive order by the president, topping the The New York Times’ most popular articles list, and even making its way into a Super Bowl commercial two years running. Normalizing this topic in the public discourse is progress. However, the public conversation is often steered by influencers and celebrities who are also cashing in, selling products and supplements that may not be science-backed, affordable, nor recommended by The Menopause Society—widely considered the preeminent clinical resource on menopause. This kind of commercial popularity should not be confused with progress in healthcare access, equity, and outcomes. Women at the margins often face distinct challenges during the decades of their lives spent in perimenopause and postmenopause. For those living in poverty or affected by systemic racism, access to high-quality healthcare is historically and abysmally low. With clinical menopause expertise in short supply (about 2,000 certified providers in the U.S.), the lack of access to quality care is further exacerbated. This is particularly true for those who rely on Medicaid, approximately 20 percent of all U.S. patients. Thank you to Jennifer Weiss-Wolf for giving Elektra’s Co-Founder & CEO Jannine Versi and Chief Medical Officer Nora Lansen, MD the opportunity to share their thoughts in Ms. Magazine on the widespread reform needed to address the dissonance between menopause care as a perceived “nice-to-have” versus what it is: essential healthcare. #WorldMenopauseMonth isn't just a celebration; it's a call to arms. In recent years, menopause has earned itself a prime spot in conversations around women’s health, but conversation alone does not equate to progress when it comes to healthcare access, equity, and outcomes. At Elektra Health, we are proud to provide high-quality menopause & midlife women’s healthcare to people of all backgrounds and insurance types, including Medicaid-sponsored insurance. With support from health plan partners like EmblemHealth, we’ve made great strides in expanding access to affordable, evidence-based menopause care. But we still frequently encounter a shocking sentiment from health plan executives: “we don’t think this population will be interested.” We can affirm, having heard from over a thousand Medicaid-insured individuals seeking access to care they can both trust and afford, they are interested! This notion that menopause care is a nice-to-have isn’t just inaccurate — it inhibits large swaths of Americans from accessing necessary care during this universal biological transition. This World Menopause Month, we invite you to join us in inviting health plans and industry stakeholders to acknowledge the crucial need for wider menopause care access — because menopause doesn’t discriminate, and neither should the healthcare system. Well-deserved recognition for Mass General Brigham Health Plan in Becker's Healthcare. MGBHP — one of Elektra's early partners — has rapidly expanded their women's health portfolio to include support for pelvic health; pregnancy, postpartum, and loss; behavioral health; and menopause and midlife. It's a testament to the growing movement among health plans shifting their strategies to be more inclusive of women across the reproductive and post-reproductive lifespan, and we love to see it! 💜
THRILLED to see Mass General Brigham Health Plan — one of Elektra’s early health plan partners — getting some love in Becker's Healthcare for their rapidly expanding women’s health portfolio, which now includes: - Sword Health (customized pelvic health offering) - Poppy Seed Health (pregnancy, postpartum, and loss) - Lyra Health (behavioral health) - Elektra Health (menopause and midlife) MGBHP is at the forefront of a growing movement among health plans who are shifting their strategies to be more inclusive of women across the reproductive & post-reproductive lifespan. And while the focus on preventive care is nothing new, it’s refreshing to see the scope of this support better tailored to what women actually need. Lisa Scarfo MD, FAAP, CHIE, medical director at MGBHP, said it best: "It's been so exciting and enlightening to see these conversations happening. Menopause, pelvic health support, these are conversations that were not happening 10 years ago. Acknowledging those needs, supporting members, thinking a little bit outside the typical chronic diseases that most plans provide additional services or care management for is really important.” In the case of menopause-centered midlife support, we’ve found that 89% of members have a more favorable opinion of their health plan for offering Elektra as a benefit. And according to a recent actuarial claims analysis, we found that there’s up to $4.6K cost savings per woman aged 40-60, per year with adequate menopause support — a figure consistent with academic research on the economic burden of menopause. Simply put, without proper care, menopause remains a significant cost driver for health plans. And given the massive care gap (due in part to lack of training - only 30% of ob/gyn residency programs offer a menopause curriculum), it is simply not sufficient to address care through standard channels. Health plans have to do more to support women’s needs. Interested in learning more about how to partner with Elektra to support your members? Send me a DM! https://lnkd.in/gyhpCFWE

We loved participating in our first Neighborhood Care event with EmblemHealth a few weeks back! Grace Veras Sealy (one of our menopause doulas) was in Elmhurst, Queens for a Chronic Disease Management event, which happened to also coincide with Spanish American Heritage Month. We distributed Spanish and English-language educational materials — plus lots of fun Elektra swag. A BIG thank you to Crystal Harrison, Nazneen Rahman, and Bethanny B. for helping to coordinate. Looking forward to finishing out World Menopause Month with more Neighborhood Care events across the 5 boroughs! See you there 💜
