People. Places. Process. For equitable transit-oriented development. @Elevated_Chi.
About us
https://linktr.ee/elevated_chi Elevated Chicago promotes racial equity, prosperity and resiliency in Chicago communities by using equitable transit-oriented development – or ETOD – as the catalyst for change. Led by a collaborative of nonprofit, public and private organizations, Elevated Chicago aims to turn the ½-mile around transit stations into racially equitable centers for climate resiliency, health and culture. Our work is guided by the core principles of adaptability, impact, inclusion, innovation and transparency. By enabling community-driven development, Elevated Chicago will position station areas as civic assets where programming and the built environment converge to create nodes of opportunity and connection across the region’s vast transit system. Our work began around seven Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) or ehubs. But today, ETOD is everywhere in Chicago, and we've expanded from seven eHubs to nearly two dozen Elevated Chicago Plus communities. Our ETOD Working Group helped create the City of Chicago's first ETOD Policy Plan. We've helped to award grants to create 11 ETOD Policy Plan demonstration projects. And our programs that include the Equitable Development Ambassadors, the J.E.D.I. (Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion) cohort with the Metropolitan Planning Council, and our annual symposium are inviting more and more people to understand and advocate for ETOD. Join us in using ETOD as a significant tool for Chicago's recovery from the crises of 2020.

Guest blogger Adam Drakulic, an Urban Environmentalists member, shares his thoughts on 925 W Belmont, a potential mixed-use ETOD located next to the Belmont Red Line station, where the Belmont Army Vintage store is currently located. The #22 Clark and #8 Halsted buses are also within walking distance. Importantly, about 40% of households in Lakeview do not have a vehicle, and about 43% use a method other than a car to commute to work, according to Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning data. Rent is also higher in Lakeview than the city median. The typical 2-bedroom apartment costs about $600+ more in the 60657 zip code. (A monthly rent of $2,491 compared to $1,819, according to Zillow.) The affordable housing provided by 925 W Belmont could help fill a need for more affordable housing close to transit in this neighborhood. Re-sharing this thoughtful opinion piece on exclusionary zoning published in the Chicago Tribune today. Elevated Chicago has been advocating for legalizing 2-flats and 3-flats near transit, and provisions to preserve these housing options are included within the city's ETOD Policy Plan. Such policies are more relevant than ever as affordable housing, gentrification, and disinvestment continue to remain concerns for Chicagoans. We encourage those interested in doing a deep dive into the affordable housing data to explore the Institute for Housing Studies at DePaul University website. #ETOD #Equity #UrbanPlanning #AffordableHousing
UE member Eshan Dosani got published in the Chicago Tribune! He points to exclusionary zoning (read: single-family-only zoning) as a policy that has - and continues to - drive racial segregation and inequity. It's an eye-opener if you've never connected these dots before.
Researchers: How to fight racial segregation? End exclusionary zoning in Illinois.

Elevated Chicago ETOD's work with programs like Elevated Works is important to provide technical assistance, system level advocacy, and predevelopment capital to emerging developers. Thanks, Nina Idemudia, AICP for highlighting this research that shows the vast underrepresentation of developers of color and women in multifamily housing.
Just read an insightful Urban Institute report on the challenges faced by developers of color and women in Chicago. Despite making up 65% of the city’s population, these groups are vastly underrepresented in the multifamily housing sector. Of 177 multifamily housing developers in Chicago, only 17 were Black led, 6 were Latinx led and 7 were Asian led. Unfortunately, these numbers are not shocking to me having spent more than a decade working with Developers in both LA and Chicago. Proud to share that through Elevated Works, a City of Chicago-funded program, CNT and partners like Elevated Chicago, IFF, MPC, and Rudd Resources are supporting emerging developers with crucial skills like community engagement, zoning, and market analysis to help bridge this gap. To address this issue, we must embrace models like Elevated Works to support emerging developers in addition to having pre-development grants and procurement reform. Shoutout to Emily Laflamme for being an incredible Program Manager —she’s creating a scalable and replicable structure that can amplify our impact across the city and beyond. When I say CNT is a "THINK and DO tank", I mean it!!! #EquityInAction #ChicagoDevelopment #InclusiveGrowth

272 N California LLC will be home to businesses Chicago Printworks (Direction Tour Marketing + Promotion) and Studio inHaus, allowing them to expand their services and increase their staff. The print shop creates printed marketing materials and the CGI studio creates 3D renderings and animations. Both have customers from all over the Chicagoland area. To complete the project, the team rehabbed a 100-year-old gear factory in East Garfield Park. A motivation behind this particular location was providing a transit-accessible option to staff, many of whom do not own a vehicle. The new space will be ready for a ribbon cutting and open house this fall. This ETOD was funded in part by the Chicago Recovery Plan and are also an Elevated Works technical assistance recipient. 272 N California LLC is right next to the #94 California bus, a few blocks away from the California Green Line station and the #49 Western bus. There are several other ETODs in the area, including The K Entrepreneurship Development Hub, Hub32, 548 Energy Institute, and BandWidth Chicago, making 272 N California LLC part of a larger ETOD movement in the area. #ETOD #UrbanPlanning #UrbanDevelopment #GarfieldPark #EastGarfieldPark #Chicago #ChicagoNews

Little Angels Learning Center is an early education center for children ages 6 weeks old to 5 years in #Englewood. They began as a single preschool classroom in 1994 and have been serving the community for 30 years. Thanks to funding from the City and State, Little Angels will be moving into a new 11,500+ square foot space at 6706 S. Emerald Ave., which is across the street from their current location. After years of working out of a shared space, Little Angels is finally getting their own two-level school with a playground and community center. The added space will allow the center to provide more classes and year-round programming to the local community. Little Angels is located next to the Halsted Green Line Station and #8 Halsted bus, making it an equitable transit-oriented development. Learn more about Little Angels Learning Center at https://lnkd.in/gnBsRvEw.
