Transit is the Answer.
About us
The Regional Transportation Authority (a.k.a. RTA) was created in 1974. In 1983, the amended Act created three "service boards" known as the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), Metra commuter rail and Pace suburban bus. The RTA's primary responsibilities became financial and budget oversight of CTA, Metra and Pace, and regional transit planning issues. Guiding the RTA's oversight responsibility is a Board of Directors who approves an annual budget and two-year financial plan. The Board consists of 15 members and a chairman appointed from the six-county region. The RTA Board is also required annually to review and approve a five-year capital plan, which is a blueprint of the capital activities to be funded by the RTA and executed by the CTA, Metra, and Pace.

Chicago's transit system faces a fiscal cliff starting in 2026. In this critical time for transit, it is urgent for Illinois legislators to secure a sufficient funding solution by the end of the spring legislative session in May 2025. If they fail to do so, the Chicago Transit Authority, Metra Commuter Rail, and Pace Suburban Bus will be forced to prepare for drastic service cuts and fare increases to balance their budgets—halting service improvements and expansions, pushing the system into a death spiral of less service, longer wait times, higher fares, and fewer riders leading to even larger and harder to solve budget gaps in the years ahead. Read more in an analysis about the fiscal cliff, its impacts, and why it is urgent to reach a funding solution by next spring on our blog: https://lnkd.in/gvEkwT9j #urbanplanning #publictransit #tranportation #chicago

The underfunding of Chicago’s public transit operations has led to multiple periods of funding changes and reform in the last 5 decades. To successfully achieve sustainable funding by 2026, looking at past transit funding crises can teach Illinois legislators that... 1. Timing matters to avoid cuts 🕑 2. New revenue sources should be sustainable and diverse 💵💡 3. Funding sources should incentivize transit ridership 🚌♻️ and more.
