Congratulations to Liliana Patino M.Ed. and her dedicated colleagues on the Governor's Latinx Empowerment Council for their incredible advocacy leading to the recent passage of Massachusetts' Affordable Homes Act! Your efforts are a testament to the power of diverse voices in strengthening our communities, and representative of Eliot Community Human Services' core values.
🎉 Celebrating Progress in Massachusetts! 🏠 Governor Maura Healey has signed the Affordable Homes Act, a landmark law shaped by community voices, including the Governor's Latinx Empowerment Advisory Council (LEAC). Numerous policies within this legislation are the fruits of community dialogues, including recommendations presented to Governor Healey during her inaugural year by LEAC, exemplifying the strength of civic engagement. This act tackles the housing affordability crisis, offering hope and equitable opportunities to the Latino community and beyond. Key measures include: $2 billion for public housing $425 million for eco-friendly housing and decarbonization $10 million to preserve affordable housing from market speculation Long awaited policies introduced: Legalizing ADUs for diverse housing options Sealing eviction records for tenant privacy A pilot program for foreclosure prevention The creation of an Office of Fair Housing Facilitating the use of State Land for Housing We extend our heartfelt thanks to the individuals and organizations such as IBA - Inquilinos Boricuas en Acción and LEAC member Vanessa Calderon-Rosado, who have tirelessly fought for this cause. We commend Governor Healey, Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll, Secretary Ed Augustus, Senator Lydia Edwards, and State Representative James Arciero for your leadership in making affordable living a reality. To the members of the Latinx Empowerment Council and my Co-Chair, Gladys Vega, thank you for your commitment and advocacy. Here’s to a brighter future for all in Massachusetts!
