This summer, Earn & Learn students participated in the Dementia Interns Bridge Youth Program at Melanin Minded, gaining valuable skills and knowledge on how to care for people with dementia. Over three weeks of intensive training, these dedicated interns prepared to train others in their community to become effective and empathetic caregivers. "This program better helps you understand the disease," shared Jaden, highlighting how the training delved into the complexities of dementia. "This program digs deeper into how to actually care for someone with dementia." The interns learned about the various types of dementia, the impact on the brain, and the specific needs of those living with the condition. Shanita reflected on her experience with Dementia Live, an immersive program that simulates the sensory experiences of a person with dementia. "We were able to see how a person with dementia hears, sees, everything. We basically got put in their shoes.” she explained. “I learned to be more calm with my Grandma." One of the unique aspects of this program was its focus on "invisible caregivers"—those who may not realize they are caregivers or who often go unrecognized, especially young people. The students learned to empathize with these caregivers and provide the support and education they need. "I'm a caregiver. The skills I'm learning have already helped me care for the people in my life," said Honesty, emphasizing the immediate impact of the training on her personal life. Anya added, "I feel like now I can help other people," underscoring the program's goal of creating a ripple effect of knowledge and support within the community. The training didn’t stop at caregiving skills. Jasmine mentioned how the program equipped her with essential professional skills, such as preparing for work, teaching, answering questions, and meeting preparation. "I want to be a lawyer, and you really have to build trust with clients," she said, noting the importance of patience and trust-building she learned through the program. Through this program, Earn & Learn students at Melanin Minded have gained a deep appreciation for the challenges faced by those with dementia and their caregivers. They have learned to empathize, educate, and support, embodying the spirit of community service and compassion. As they continue their journey, they are well-prepared to make lasting contributions to the lives of many. Dr. Bashir Easter
