At Endor Health, we are proud to live and work in the city where insulin therapy was discovered by Frederick Banting and his assistant Charles Best. A common misconception is that Banting discovered insulin, but this isn't precisely true. Time for a history lesson 👇 In late 1921, Banting was working as a professor at the University of Toronto when he became interested in the pancreas and diabetes. Banting read a medical journal article that suggested #diabetes was caused by a lack of production of a specific hormone produced by the islets of Lagerhans in the pancreas. That article named the hormone "insulin". So if Banting read about insulin in a journal, why is he so famous? Well, while the scientific community had a good theory about insulin at the time, nobody knew how to isolate it and extract it. While the pancreas produces insulin, it also secretes another enzyme called trypsin which caused insulin to break down during attempts to isolate it. Without the ability to isolate insulin, the true cause of diabetes would forever remain a theory. What Banting did is he developed a working concept of a procedure that would allow him to destroy the trypsin-producing cells in the pancreas without destroying the insulin. With the help of his medical assistant Charles Best, Banting proved that this procedure worked and was able to isolate insulin for the first time in late 1921. In January 1922, insulin from the pancreas of a dog was administered to the first human patient - a 14 year old Canadian named Leonard Thompson - and the rest is history. So while Banting is credited as discovering insulin, more accurately he discovered insulin therapy by figuring out how to extract and and administer it to treat diabetes. No matter which words you use to credit this incredible discovery, those of us with diabetes are forever grateful for Banting and his work. #diabetesawareness #diabeteshistory #historyofdiabetes #diabetesawarenessmonth #diabetescanada #banting
