🚨 Texas is leading the battery storage revolution—but is there room for Supercritical CO₂ storage? #Batterystorage in Texas has grown by 5,500% since 2019, with over 10,000 MW now online. Lithium-ion is scaling rapidly, costs are dropping, and gigafactories are expanding. Meanwhile, startups like EarthEn Energy , led by Manas Pathak, are pioneering Supercritical CO₂ energy storage, a new approach that could redefine long-duration storage. Where Supercritical CO₂ Could Win: ✅High energy density, small footprint – Unlike pumped hydro or cavern storage, EarthEn’s closed-loop CO₂ pods can be transported on a flatbed truck. ✅Flexible storage duration – Scales from 4 to 100+ hours by simply adjusting CO₂ levels. ✅Pipeline integration potential – Existing CO₂ pipelines could be repurposed for energy storage, lowering capital costs. But Here’s the Challenge: ▶️Batteries are already dominant – Can Supercritical CO₂ scale fast enough? ▶️Infrastructure hurdles – Retrofitting pipelines isn’t straightforward. ▶️Economic viability – Can it compete with lithium-ion and emerging flow batteries? Manas believes Supercritical CO₂ storage fills the gaps that lithium-ion can’t, offering a dispatchable, long-duration solution for renewables. 📢 We explored this debate in an earlier Energy Tech Nexus Podcast, where Manas Pathak shared his vision for CO₂-powered energy storage and what’s needed for it to scale. Listen to the full episode (link in the comments) and weigh in. Is this the next breakthrough in LDES, or is the grid already moving past it?
