Right now, our Commonwealth has a rare opportunity to overcome the failures of this summer and end the year with strong climate policy. Our Legislature must take advantage of this opportunity and finally pass the 2024 climate and clean energy bill. We encourage you to make your voice heard on this issue. Send a message to your legislators urging them to act swiftly and push for ambitious legislation: https://lnkd.in/gYGRxBFQ. Climate can’t wait! #mapoli
Climate action is too important to wait. Thankfully, the State House has another chance to act this year. On August 1st, the Massachusetts Legislature adjourned from what we thought was its final formal session of 2024. A long list of incomplete work was left on the table, including a major clean energy package and an economic development bill proposing significant investments in climatetech. It was disappointing, to say the least, but here’s the silver lining: the response from residents across the Commonwealth was resounding, and the message was clear – ending the legislative session without major climate action is unacceptable. The good news is that our elected officials have gotten the message. Just yesterday, leaders announced that the House and Senate have reached an agreement on a comprehensive clean energy package and are preparing to vote next week to send it to the Governor. Passing robust siting and permitting reforms for renewables and planning for a fossil fuel-free future will ensure we don’t lose more time in the fight to meet our environmental challenges. We can also create a more competitive, more equitable, and greener economy in Massachusetts – but if we don’t act decisively, we’ll fall even further behind states like New York and California. The best time to get these bills done was months ago; the next-best time is now. This rare second chance reflects the urgency our electeds feel to do right by their communities. The actions our Legislature takes over the next few days can show that Massachusetts is not willing to lose our spot as a national leader on climate. Follow us at Environmental League of Massachusetts (ELM) to find updates on the session.

The NE4OSW team is excited to be on the ground in Burlington as a sponsor of the Renewable Energy Vermont Annual Conference, where Rep. Laura Sibilia, a key legislator behind the state’s recently passed 100% Renewable Energy Standard, was recognized for the hard work for 2 years to get the RES law over the finish line. The updated standard opens the pathway for Vermont utilities to buy offshore wind energy!

ELM Corporate Council member Form Energy reached a major milestone on Wednesday, receiving $405M in new funding for their production of longer-lasting alternatives to lithium batteries. The company's affordable and scalable technology has proven to be a massive advancement in sustainable energy storage - "Manufacturing long-duration energy storage at a commercial scale is seen as essential for lowering carbon emissions that are causing climate change, because it makes clean energy available when the sun isn’t shining, or the wind isn’t blowing." “I’m incredibly proud of how far our team has come in scaling our iron-air battery technology,” - Mateo Jaramillo, CEO. Emil Dimanchev 📣 "By importing excess offshore wind energy from New England, Hydro-Québec can withhold production from its reservoirs and store more of the water behind their dams, which would act as long duration energy storage that can be used later in New England when there is a shortfall of renewable output." #offshorewind #cleanenergy #renewableenergy #windpower #climate Acadia Center | Environmental League of Massachusetts (ELM)
