Last week at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, the EOPSS team, including Undersecretary Gina Kwon and Law Enforcement Advisor Scott Range, convened a task force meeting focused on the safety and security of large venues across Massachusetts. With big events drawing significant crowds, ensuring we’re prepared for any situation is more important than ever. Large Venue Task Force members engaged in a productive conversation about crowd management strategies, emergency response protocols, and the latest technology to enhance venue security. The meeting also included a presentation by former Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Assistant Sheriff Todd Fasulo and Clark County Deputy Fire Chief Billy Samuels about the October 2017 mass shooting at the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival, which resulted in the death of 58 people and injured over 800. This tragic incident required a coordinated multi-agency response and an effective crisis management plan. The presenters shared their experience with activating an incident command structure and offered vital lessons learned from the nation’s deadliest active shooter incident. Working together with experts across different fields and disciplines, we’re taking proactive steps to keep everyone safe. Thank you to our presenters and Task Force meeting participants for their continued collaboration and partnership. #EventSafety #CrowdManagement #SecurityPlanning #PublicSafety #TaskForceMeeting

This week, the Massachusetts Department of Correction and Boston College announced the first graduates of the Boston College Prison Education Program. 📚 🎓 This nationally renowned program allows incarcerated individuals to pursue a college degree while serving their sentences at MCI-Shirley, a medium-security facility. This momentous achievement reflects the meaningful impact of a strong partnership, and an innovative collaboration designed to advance shared values of educational equity, second chances, and rehabilitation. The inaugural graduation ceremony held at MCI-Shirley on September 23rd celebrated the academic accomplishments of the first three incarcerated students to successfully earn their bachelor’s degrees in Applied Liberal Arts. As the largest higher education in-prison program in Massachusetts, the BCPEP has admitted over 80 incarcerated students into its program since its inception in 2019. The EOPSS team congratulates Jillian Smith, recipient of the 2024 Madeline “Amy” Sweeney Award for Civilian Bravery. ❤️ Today, on the 23rd anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, Governor Maura Healey and Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll presented Ms. Smith with the prestigious Sweeney Award for her extraordinary rescue of an elderly couple from a house fire in the Town of Wales. On December 18, 2023, Ms. Smith was alerted to the fire at her neighbor's home. Without hesitation, she selflessly and courageously entered the burning house, navigating flames and thick smoke to locate her trapped neighbor and pull her to safety. This annual award is named in honor of Madeline "Amy" Sweeney, an American Airlines flight attendant working aboard American Airlines Flight 11, the first aircraft hijacked by terrorists and flown into the North Tower of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. In the flight’s final minutes, Amy heroically contacted the airline’s ground services crew to convey crucial information about the hijackers and their actions on the plane that morning. The Madeline “Amy” Sweeney Award for Civilian Bravery was created to honor her legacy of exceptional heroism and in memory of all those lost to the tragic events of September 11, 2001. ➡ Learn more about Jillian's courageous act: https://lnkd.in/e5W-y-v9
