Using the law to protect & promote the rights of women & girls for 30 years.

About us

For 30 years, Equality Now has been using the law to create a just world for women and girls. We use a unique combination of legal advocacy, regional partnership-building, and community mobilization to realize our vision of a more just and equal world for women and girls. We are coalition builders, system disruptors, and unapologetic feminists who know that the only way to achieve substantial equality is through structural change and addressing the root causes of oppression. Our global network of lawyers, activists, and supporters holds governments responsible for their international obligation to prohibit all forms of violence and discrimination against women. The law is a powerful tool that can either perpetuate inequality or combat it. At Equality Now, we work around the clock to ensure that it does the latter.

Our latest piece covering the conflict in Sudan highlights the impact of #SexualViolence on women and girls, who are being deterred from reporting sexual assaults. As an organization dedicated to safeguarding and promoting the human rights of all women and girls, we condemn all acts of gender-based and sexual violence against women and girls, including as a weapon of war. This week in #SOAWR! #SOAWR turned 20! As the founding member and secretariat, we joined other coalition members in celebrating the twentieth anniversary of SOAWR, established to ensure that the rights of women and girls as articulated in the Maputo Protocol are prioritized. SOAWR at 20 was an opportunity to recount the challenges and significant milestones over the years, with a strong call for the collective work that organizations must continue to do in ensuring the universal ratification of the Protocol is realized. Learn more about the 20 year journey at: https://loom.ly/s9boVeo Read EN’s article on the benefits of the protocol to women and girls in Africa: https://loom.ly/eK8Bpxo Earlier in the week, SOAWR members also convened to engage with the various international and regional human rights bodies to advocate for the ratification, domestication and effective implementation of the Maputo Protocol by African States.

Collaboration to improve access to justice for women with disabilities who are survivors of violence was discussed today in #Bishkek, in the Supreme Court of #Kyrgyzstan. Equality Now's Eurasia Regional Representative met Nurlan Musaev, Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Court, and Anarkhan Bazaralieva, Director of the High School of Justice under the Supreme Court of Kyrgyzstan. We thank the Supreme Court of Kyrgyzstan for its openness and commitment to addressing this crucial issue. Equality Now is working on a manual for the justice professionals in Kyrgyzstan to increase access to justice for the #WomenWithDisabilities, who are survivors of #SexualViolence. This manual is designed to improve the investigation, prosecution, and adjudication of sexual violence cases involving survivors with disabilities and ensure that survivors receive the necessary support throughout the criminal justice process. The ultimate goal is to produce strong, universally applicable standards compliant with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Over the last few days, we have been at #SummitOfTheFuture, an event bringing world leaders together “to forge a new international consensus on how we deliver a better present and safeguard the future.” This has been an opportunity to strategize on the implementation of the adopted Global Digital Compact (GDC), working with Alliance for Universal Digital Rights (AUDRi) to ensure gender and digital rights are properly protected and promoted. Read more on the #GlobalDigitalCompact here: https://lnkd.in/eyeSFBvf

Yesterday the #GlobalDigitalCompact, an annex to the #PactOfTheFuture, was agreed by UN Member States at the #SummitOfTheFuture. It’s a significant step towards ensuring a digital future that benefits all of us, and we have been working with civil society partners for over a year to influence its content on #GenderEquality. Now that it's been agreed, what do we think about the final draft, and what does this mean for our work? As we enter Day 2 of the summit, which focuses on our digital future, Equality Now’s Tsitsi Matekaire explains that our work on the #GDC is far from over.

Equality Now hosted an expert meeting in Belgrade, Serbia, on sexual violence against women with disabilities. Our Eurasia team gathered professionals from all over the world to collaborate on setting strong standards to improve access to justice for sexual violence survivors with disabilities. The expert meeting was focused on enhancing the criminal justice response to #SexualViolence against #WomenWithDisabilities, with a specific aim to develop a manual tailored for lawyers and criminal justice practitioners in #Kyrgyzstan. This manual will be designed to improve the investigation, prosecution, and adjudication of sexual violence cases involving survivors with disabilities and ensure that survivors receive the necessary support throughout the criminal justice process. This meeting brought together experts in disability rights, sexual violence, and criminal justice to collaborate on setting strong, universally applicable standards compliant with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Participants were engaged in in-depth discussions, shared expertise, and contributed to refining the draft manual. The ultimate goal is to produce a comprehensive and practical guide that will lead to meaningful improvements in access to justice for women and girls with disabilities who are survivors of sexual violence. Thank you to all the organizations and experts involved in this collaboration! Last week, we celebrated the kickoff of the 2024 Public Voices Fellowship on Advancing the Rights of Women and Girls, hosted by The OpEd Project. This extraordinary cohort of diverse thought leaders gathered in person to share their perspectives and learn how to translate their ideas into influential written pieces. At Equality Now, we're committed to amplifying underrepresented voices in international human rights spaces. This fellowship is crucial in ensuring that those who are often overlooked have the opportunity to shape legislation, legal reform, and policy. As experts in international human rights, we recognize the need for our thinking to evolve and make space for fresh ideas from diverse perspectives. This fantastic group of women, with backgrounds ranging from FGM to AI, sexual violence justice, and more, is poised to bring about meaningful change. We're excited to see their impact and grateful to Google for supporting this project over the past three years.
