Founded in 1991, Education Through Music (ETM) is a nonprofit organization that has provided over 8 million hours of music education in NYC public schools. ETM promotes the use of music as a means of enhancing students' academic performance and general development. By providing year-long, in-school music education programs with a dedicated staff of teachers and support management, ETM makes music education a reality for thousands of children who would otherwise have limited or no exposure to music instruction at school. 🎙️New podcast episode! Did you know that over half of NYC schools do not have a full-time certified music teacher on staff? This reality, in combination with a national teacher shortage, has caused music educator vacancies at far too many schools. In response, ETM launched its Music Teacher Workforce Development Program during the 2023-2024 school year to create pathways for musicians interested in teaching music to receive the opportunity, training, and support they need to navigate the process of becoming certified teachers. 🎼 In this episode, we go inside ETM’s pioneering workforce development program to understand the origins and impact of the initiative during its first year. “I’ve always said that it was those years of working for ETM that made me into the teacher I am today.” This is from ETM Alum, Kevin Heathwood. After starting his teaching career with ETM back in 2011, Kevin has gone on to become the band director at Townsend Harris High School in Queens and one of the associate conductors for the All City Concert Band.
