🔥Did you know the 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games torch is made from 100% recycled steel scrap? Now, that’s a winner! ArcelorMittal France has created 2,000 of these torches to be carried by 10,000 torchbearers on their route to the Games in late July. And today, the torch relay is in #Strasbourg, home of the Council of Europe, the European Court of Human Rights and the European Parliament – and we can’t think of a better way to celebrate Europe’s competitiveness than with this symbol of green industry and its potential. 💡 Interesting summer read for energy and decarbonisation experts as well as European Commission, European Parliament & Council of the European Union policymakers.   Carbon Pulse’s Frédéric Simon’s article features a rare comprehensive in-depth analysis of the challenges of decarbonisation for energy intensive industries such as steel and the close relationship with the EU reform of the electricity market design.   Key points of the article include:   🔧 EU Power Market Reform: Reforming electricity market rules is essential to provide low-cost renewable energy for energy-intensive industries and improve the EU steel industry’s competitiveness. Adolfo Aiello, Deputy Director General of EUROFER, stresses the need to address energy issues. - "The last reform of the electricity market did not go far enough, and there won't be any decoupling of fossil fuel prices from electricity prices at least until 2040," Aiello said, citing modelling results from the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC).    🌱 Challenges in Decarbonisation: The steel industry faces pressure to shift to low-carbon electricity, natural gas, and green hydrogen. #SteelMarket Outlook – Q3 2024 is hot off the press for a burning summer read! 🚨 Key Insights: 🔴 Key indicators in the European steel market are in red. A manufacturing crisis in major steel-using sectors like construction and automotive, coupled with persisting high energy prices, inflation, and geopolitical tensions, is heavily weighing on demand. Main data from Q1 2024: apparent steel consumption fell by -3.1%, steel-using sectors’ output dropped by -1.9%, while the import share remained historically high at 27%. 🟡 This ongoing decline in major demand factors has further weakened growth prospects for 2024 and 2025. The rebound is still uncertain and has been revised downwards for apparent steel consumption. Steel-using sectors are expected to record a steeper-than-projected recession this year (-1.6%). 🟢 Apparent steel consumption is expected to recover moderately in 2024 (+3.2%), and more strongly in 2025 (+4.1%). Steel-using sectors’ output growth is also expected to rebound gradually (+2.3%) in 2025.
