Dr. Kelsey Morgan, UCI Blum Center's anti-human trafficking and survivor support expert (and CEO of EverFree), was honored last week as a Distinguished Alumni from the School of Social Ecology! The award recognizes Dr. Morgan's longstanding and passionate commitment to end human trafficking and empower survivors through her data-based, survivor-centered approach the Freedom Lifemap. She received this honor at this year's Lauds & Laurels ceremony, a long-standing tradition that celebrates UCI alumni for professional and personal achievements contributing to the university and the wider community. Congratulations on this well-earned award, Dr. Morgan!

Sometimes you need a friend. Jennifer Friend (right) was there to congratulate pal Kelsey Morgan when the latter recently received this year’s UC Irvine Lauds & Laurels Distinguished Alumna award from the School of Social Ecology. Both are leaders of Orange County nonprofits (Friend, Project Hope Alliance; Morgan, EverFree), Orange County Register Most Influential People of 2023, UCI alums who majored in social ecology (Friend, B.A. '95; Morgan, B.A. ’10 & Ph.D. ’24) and fellow Lauds & Laurels recipients (Friend received it in '16).

This powerful film highlights the resilience of survivors who have transformed their experiences into powerful advocacy towards building a world with freedom for all. “Reclaiming Freedom” challenges prevalent narratives about exploitation and highlights a transformative shift from a focus on rescue to one centered on empowerment. Sharifa, featured here is one of seven survivors leading the film with their voices. Sharifa shares her story of freedom and of her advocacy as a Victim Support Officer for EverFree Uganda as she calls for an end to exploitation. Hear her story and those of other survivors. According to the company's first transparency report since 2021, X sent 370,588 reports of child exploitation to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in just the first half of 2024—a response required by law. X also suspended 2,781,634 accounts for "engaging with (liking, replying, bookmarking, etc.) Child Sexual Abuse Media. This is just ONE platform amidst the vastness of the online world. While transparency and reporting are crucial in keeping online platforms accountable, companies must continue to strengthen protections to prioritize the safety and well-being of children and proactively prevent online exploitation. #onlinesafety #tech #stopexploitation

I am thrilled to represent EverFree at the upcoming conference from the British University in Georgia, “From Insight to Impact: Research, Resources, and Resilience in University-Led Development”. I will share EverFree's Freedom Lifemap and its roots in proven methodology as part of a panel discussion on technological advancements in poverty research. I look forward to the discussion moderated by keynote speaker and Poverty Stoplight founder Martín Burt on how strengths-based approaches can be transformative across sectors.
