1 dead, 2 seriously injured after pit collapses in North York, police say Pit collapsed on 3 men while they were fixing a sewer pipe, police say A man is dead and two others are seriously injured after a pit collapsed on them on Wednesday, Toronto police say. Police said the men were fixing a sewer pipe in the Bayview Avenue and Ruddington Avenue area when the pit collapsed at about 5:25 p.m. Platoon Chief Chris Rowland, spokesperson for Toronto Fire Services, said the three workers were inspecting water pipes in an excavation behind a facility, inserting a camera in a pipe, when one of the walls of the site buckled and a large amount of soil fell on top of them. Rowland said Toronto Fire Services initially put ladders in the hole and brought shovels but quickly realized it was a trench rescue. Two crews with ropes went into the hole, he said. "Most of this digging, because it's on top of people, was done by hand. These guys were probably inside digging by hand for the better part of just over an hour to dig them out completely," Rowland said. "These two gentlemen survived because the two crews that were inside that hole risked their lives." Toronto Paramedics took the two men to hospital. Initially, police said the men suffered life-threatening injuries but later said their injuries were serious and non-life-threatening. "In my 38 years, I have never seen danger like this." Ontario's Ministry of Labour has taken over the investigation, according to police. CBC News has reached out to the ministry for further information. Worksafe investigates after person ‘stuck under dirt’ rescued following ‘trench collapse’ A WorkSafe investigation is underway after two people were transported to Auckland Hospital following a trench collapse in a central city suburb. One person was seriously injured and a second person received moderate injuries, a police spokesperson said. WorkSafe’s investigation manager, Danielle Henry said it’s too early to determine exactly what went wrong here. “Our investigation is in its initial stages and the specifics will become clearer with time. “Excavation failures are particularly dangerous because they can occur quickly, limiting the ability of workers to escape, especially if the collapse is extensive.” A report of a person “stuck under dirt” in Rutherford Terrace, Meadowbank, was received around 2.55pm on Friday. “Emergency services are in attendance at a premises in Rutherford Terrace, Meadowbank after receiving a report at around 2.55pm that two people had been injured in a workplace incident,” a police spokesperson said. FENZ shift manager Josh Pennefather said, “It was a trench collapse. One person was stuck under the dirt.” A St John spokesperson said they responded with two ambulances, a rapid response vehicle and an operations manager. “Two people have been taken to Auckland Hospital...” Source: https://lnkd.in/ghBhyPWP #ThinkInsideTheBox #ExcavateSafe #TrenchSafety #TrenchCollapse #TrenchRescue
