Thoughtful Design Tip #19 When conducting research with vulnerable populations, it’s important to bring trauma-informed best practices. One such practice is understanding participant needs and constraints before the session. It’s critical to ask questions to understand their comfort level with any technologies being used, if they have any constraints in terms of internet accessibility or device usage, if they need any physical or cognitive accommodations, etc. That will make participants feel more respected and set up for success. Thoughtful Design Tip #18 When conducting accessibility testing and interviews is critical to be intentional about your process to meet each individual’s needs. When recruiting consider that people with disabilities have a range of experiences, needs, and ability. Make a point to include a range of experiences and abilities in testing. When recruiting, consider a participant’s history with assistive technology and ensure a fair representation of a range of technical skill. When testing with people with disabilities, make affordances to use the person’s personal technology and devices. Each individual has their own environment and preferences and your testing should take that into account. Exygy reposted this
A couple weeks ago I attended a panel on the Challenges and Opportunities in Food Tech for Sustainability at 9Zero Climate Innovation Hub. Big thanks to Guadalupe Albuquerque, Shannon Theobald, and Paul Shapiro for sharing your perspectives and expertise on emerging tech solutions and innovative technology in sustainable food tech. I'm thrilled to continue my journey as a climate Designer at Exygy, where we're digging deeper into the Climate Justice impact area. As an Anthropologist and Archaeologist, I consider it imperative to examine how climate solutions influence socio-cultural dynamics as well as their effects on planet, human, and animal health. Looking forward to many more events like these at 9Zero Climate Innovation Hub's beautiful space! #ClimateDesign #Exygy #ClimateDesigners #ClimateJustice #SanFrancisco #Anthropology #Archaeology

Thoughtful Design Tip #17 A core tenet of Thoughtful Design is how we do, or sometimes don’t do, user research. When considering a new project, or beginning work within a new jurisdiction with Bloom Housing, we first gather all research that’s been done with residents and users, and conduct our secondary research. From there, we can determine if doing organic user research is necessary to reach our research goals. Sometimes, with full honesty, the answer is “no.” In Beyond Chicago’s landmark resource, “Why Am I Always Being Researched,” residents of Chicago expressed a feeling of often participating in urban research studies without benefit or knowledge of how the research is used. While user research is crucial for us as designers to design toward improving a person’s experience with a product or service, it’s important to recognize and respect the strain that research can have on a participant. We ask ourselves - do we have what we need already? In this way, Thoughtful Design embodies the value of “Sometimes, less is more.” For more on Thoughtful Design, check out our website: https://lnkd.in/gstVSDXa #Design #HumanCenteredDesign #TechforGood #DesignforGood #SocialImpactTech #Impact #Framework
