Mapping pollution to protect the ocean

About us

Eyesea is a nonprofit organization with a mission to map global pollution and maritime hazards. Without proper data on maritime pollution – what and where it is – effective solutions are hard to find. In 2020 we developed the concept of using geotagged pictures to chart (‘map’ for you landlubbers) maritime pollution. Funding and support have been obtained, and our mapping solution has been developed. Those who work and play on the ocean care deeply about its health and future. Seafarers, members of the public, recreational sailors, professional mariners, fishermen, surfers, and divers all have unique access to the coast, littoral waters, the vastness of the ‘blue water’ ocean. Anyone with access to the beach can keep an eye on its health. As a community, we can help map and identify pollution simply by taking a picture through the Eyesea App. Images are important because they are quick and easy to take, and because they have a strong impact.

Beginning with its 2024 Arctic season, expedition cruise operator Aurora Expeditions launched its partnership with Eyesea, an app that lets users document, report, and geotag sightings of plastic debris and other pollution in the ocean or along the shoreline. Its Citizen Science Coordinators assist participants with collecting and sharing data, which Eyesea then analyzes and maps to help inform the allocation of cleanup resources. Aurora has played a crucial role in testing Eyesea’s reporting system, as well as the accuracy of its satellite imaging spectrometry—which can help detect and locate marine plastic pollution from space—in the remote locations where its ships sail. The partnership will eventually roll out to Aurora sailings in other destinations. - Condé Nast, Bright Ideas in Travel 2024 Our most expansive list yet of the players, places, and projects moving the travel industry into the future. https://lnkd.in/gv63qWHw

Mumbai - On our way to each beach cleanup, we’d pass by areas where daily wage workers stood, hoping to find work. We decided to do our part to support construction workers and other casual laborers who often earn low wages and rely on daily work to provide for themselves and their families. We emptied half of our stock and filled our mini-truck, Eyesea 1, with clothes. Our two young permanent volunteers, Lucius (10) and Nascha (9), joined us as well. The collection, sorting and washing of clothes took weeks but to our surprise, everything was distributed within 30 minutes, and there were still people left waiting. We plan to repeat this effort in the coming weeks. All the clothes we had were collected from households as part of our plastic collection initiative. We’ve noticed that many people are willing to donate clothes but often lack the time, resources, or quantity to drop them off. By offering home pickups, we’re helping donors save time and make a difference. Discarded clothes contribute significantly to pollution on both land and in the oceans. By passing on clothes to those in need, we not only prevent pollution but also support people in our communities, promoting a culture of sustainability and sharing. Every journey is made possible by the support of others. We're deeply thankful to our exceptional Eyesea leadership team, members and partners: Isle of Man Ship Registry , MPC Container Ships ASA, NSB GROUP, Tim Ponath , Cameron Mitchell, Constantin S. Baack. Your commitment has been instrumental in bringing us to this point, and it inspires us to continue striving for a cleaner, greener future. Thank you ! #eyesea #ocean #land #pollution #sustainablity Lisbon Ferrao

Notes from Mumbai - This Sunday marked our 350th week of cleanup efforts. Through our work with schoolchildren, we’ve noticed that most of them have little to no experience with gardening or caring for pets. Urbanization has created a significant disconnect between people—especially children—and the natural world. Our apartments are getting smaller with the rising cost of real estate, and with less access to outdoor space, it’s harder to cultivate plants, raise animals, or even spend time in nature. This loss affects not only our personal well-being but also how we view and value the world around us - The natural world. A few days ago, a mother and her young daughter walked by a girl petting a stray cat. The mother commented to her daughter on how "disgusting" it was. Videos circulating people tie firecrackers to dogs' tails and set them off, watching as the terrified animals run in panic. Others crowd around injured turtles, stranded whales, or dolphins, getting close for selfies rather than offering help. When grown ups , especially children grow up without regular exposure to plants, animals, and outdoor ecosystems, it limits their understanding of the importance of the natural world. They may not learn how interconnected life is or the role each part of the ecosystem plays, from insects to trees. If we continue to separate ourselves from nature in our daily lives, we risk raising generations who feel distant from, or indifferent toward, the environment. #eyesea #nature #animals Lisbon Ferrao

Happy Diwali, everyone! This morning, Eyesea 1—the name of our tempo—was adorned with a garland to celebrate the festive season. She was busy as usual, collecting mostly clothes. We couldn't miss the chance to gather as many as we could, knowing there are many in need who would benefit from them, and to prevent these clothes from ending up in a landfill or, worse, in the ocean. Wishing everyone a wonderful Diwali #diwali #eyesea Lisbon Ferrao

Notes from Mumbai The past two weeks have been a whirlwind of activities ! We had the opportunity to present our plastic pollution awareness campaign to the enthusiastic students of Vidyavardhini's College of Engineering & Technology. Together, we expressed our thoughts on the critical impacts of plastic waste and encouraged them to take action by joining our mission. In the days that followed, we embarked on a clothing donation drive, sorting through items for reuse and sending unusable stock off to be upcycled. With daily pick-ups, we’ve amassed over 200 kg of clothing in just two weeks—each piece a step toward sustainability! This Sunday’s beach cleanup was particularly special. While the turnout was smaller due to the festival season, we were thrilled to welcome new faces eager to make a difference. Their enthusiasm was infectious and reminded us that every effort counts. A standout moment from these weeks was participating in the India Clean Up Confluence 2024—a truly enriching experience. It was a privilege to share insights from Eyesea and learn from other inspiring leaders dedicated to our cause. A heartfelt thank you to Greenmyna and Carter Clean Up for organizing such an impactful event, which brought together changemakers and artists from all over the country. Meeting those whose work we deeply admire filled us with gratitude and renewed purpose. we are confident that, together, we can strive toward a more sustainable and greener planet.
