Earlier on the Family Business Audiocast… 💭 In Episode 23 of Family Business Audiocast, we sat down with Emily Bouchard, Former Head of the Institute for Family Business Success at PNC Private Bank Hawthorn, and Jim Benedict, CPA, CFP®, Co Head Business Owner Solutions at PNC Private Bank Hawthorn, to discuss the critical considerations for family business succession, wealth transition, and sale preparation. With decades of experience advising ultra-high-net-worth families, Emily and Jim provided valuable insights into how family businesses can successfully navigate pivotal financial and emotional decisions. — Key Takeaways from the Conversation ✅ Presale Planning: Preparing for a sale or transition requires a strategic approach considering family dynamics, governance structures, and financial readiness. Proper planning minimizes disruption and maximizes value. ✅ Sale vs. Recapitalization: Families must decide whether to sell the business outright or pursue a dividend recapitalization. While a sale provides liquidity and a clear exit, a recapitalization allows owners to extract wealth while maintaining control. ✅ Balancing Family Dynamics: Succession planning can be complex, particularly in blended families or when multiple generations are involved. Ensuring alignment on ownership, roles, and future direction is critical. ✅ Fair vs. Equal: A common challenge in wealth transitions is determining how to distribute assets among heirs. Treating all family members equally may not always be the fairest approach, especially when some have played a more active role in the business. ✅ Post-Sale Wealth Planning: Once a business is sold, families must have a strategy for wealth management, estate planning, and generational continuity to preserve and grow their legacy. Tune in to the full episode for a deeper exploration of these critical topics and strategies for ensuring a successful transition for your family business. — 🔗 Listen to the episode here: Apple Podcast: https://lnkd.in/eHZ6UvdP Spotify: https://lnkd.in/eKNtMmBZ Amazon Music/Audible: https://lnkd.in/e932z7SJ iHeart Radio: https://lnkd.in/eqpyBYjp Pandora: https://lnkd.in/eEtSBvrv — R. Great insights on family office investing! Balancing personal expertise with strong governance is key. The five rules are spot on—especially avoiding excessive fees and chasing past returns. Great insights from Shaun Parkin
Family Office Investing. People are often surprised when they see family office portfolios. With such large asset size, they expect them to be very "institutional" in their portfolio construction. And sometimes this is true, especially for those portfolios built on more of an endowment style model. But often, they reflect the family's interests and biases. Which makes sense - if they have a skill set in VC or real estate - why not lean into it. A portfolio that is less like a pension fund and more like a high net worth individual means that investment policy and other governance measures are paramount. And this article from Barry Ritholtz states the goal, no matter your asset size - don't try to score wins all the time, just try to make fewer errors. Five simple rules for everyone (family offices included): 1) Avoid excess fees - with an eye to total return. Make sure you include advice fees, not just MERs. 2) Don't chase investments based on high historical returns - often you're late to the party and mean reversion kicks in. 3) Core and satellite - keep a stable core and, if needed a satellite that can create fun/engagement etc. 4) De-risk/Rebalance - back to long term weights 5) There is no free lunch - higher yield/return = higher risk. There's a fine line between 10% yield and zero. The key for family offices is to have a decision making process regarding the investment office. I cover this topic in the latest episode of the Family Office Sherpa Podcast titled: "Overcoming Decision Making Paralysis in the Family Office" here:https://lnkd.in/gvufMncH or on Apple Podcasts. #familyoffice #wealthmanagement #assetmanagement #familyoffices https://lnkd.in/gcm8tXMZ

Yesterday’s HBS Global Families in Business Conference was another outstanding event! Congratulations to the Family Business Club at Harvard Business School for hosting a record-breaking gathering, with 900 tickets sold and over 150 MBAs from business schools across the country flying in to take part. I also want to thank Arthur Piëch, Vincent Dassault, and Sarah von Faber-Castell for engaging with me in a panel discussion on the rising generation’s role in family business. A huge well done to the Family Business Club, especially Rosa Morona, Viraj Patel, and Nitya Hinduja, for their leadership in making this conference such a success. Hats off as well to conference co-chairs Katie Newton and Pelayo A. and the entire team for their incredible work. Looking forward to seeing how they build on this momentum for 2026!
