"It’s part of our secret sauce to address untreated mental illness and addiction and the significant traumas that (women) have had in their lives," says Mimi Tarrasch, chief program officer for Women in Recovery, a comprehensive prison diversion program run out of Family & Children's Services, a large nonprofit in the county of Tulsa, Oklahoma. It has had remarkable success in diverting women with drug and alcohol problems from long stretches in prison. In fact, for the 669 women who have graduated from the program the recidivism rate is less than 3%. For the next six weeks, Barrett and Greene Inc. will be publishing a series of interviews with six women who are deeply involved in the program. It involves a year to 18 months of difficult but transformative work including about 500 hours of individual and group therapy that is all evidence-based. Its success relies on strong collaboration with governmental institutions including the courts, the criminal justice system in Oklahoma, Tulsa and neighboring counties and the State of Oklahoma. This program can be a model elsewhere. It’s been a privilege to lead our Family & Children's Services Children’s Mental Health staff in the Trust-Based Relational Intervention® training. Our staff learned how to utilize “engine plates” to help our kids increase self-regulation skills and how TBRI Nurture Groups can teach kids who’ve experienced relational trauma to give & receive care, negotiate their needs and have autonomy.

FCS’ Carolyn Thomas and Jacqueline Lemons shared the reasons behind our adoption of the Zero Overdose framework. Last year, Oklahoma saw over 1,000 overdose deaths — each a preventable tragedy. Overdose is the leading cause of accidental death in our state, devastating families and communities. This is why FCS has partnered with ZeroOverdose.org, committing to impactful changes within our agency and the wider community. By embracing the Zero Overdose framework, FCS is dedicated to saving lives. https://lnkd.in/g5T3crsG #FCS #MentalHealthAndMore #MORE #opioidscrisis #recovery #ODMHSAS Adam Andreassen
