FASPE challenges future leaders to recognize their ethical responsibilities as professionals.
About us
FASPE is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote ethical leadership and responsibility among professionals—beginning with recognition of the influence that professionals have on all aspects of contemporary society. FASPE’s distinctive approach is to examine the roles and behavior of individual professionals in Germany and elsewhere between 1933 and 1945 as an initial framework for approaching ethical responsibility in the professions today. By examining the behavior and motivations of the professionals who -- by choice and action -- enabled and enacted Nazi policies, we establish the importance and urgency of professionalism and ethical leadership today.

FASPE (Fellowships at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics) reposted this
I always look forward to reading the musings of David Goldman - always an important nugget or reminder. This month’s edition is especially timely and important. “An ethical duty of the professional is to be diligently self-aware and vigilant in asking about potential unintended consequences.” Such an important reminder. Such simple and yet profound wisdom. What might happen if I do this? How do I keep in mind all the different stakeholders and potential impacts? Admittedly, a familiar task of the bioethicist in contemplating complex cases. Nevertheless, a critical reminder of our duty as professionals and the importance of examining and keeping vigil over our motivations and moral dashboard. Proud board member of FASPE (Fellowships at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics) ❤️ #questionyourethics #bioethics
Each month, FASPE Founder and Chairman David Goldman examines a topic relevant to professional ethics and invites readers to share their perspectives. In this month’s edition of Considering Professional Ethics, David addresses complicity among professionals. Evan Gershkovich is a dedicated journalist, like so many in his profession. They work under enormous pressure, even personal danger. Journalism and journalists are under attack for merely practicing their craft. In July, 2022, Evan wrote on Twitter: “Reporting on Russia is now also a regular practice of watching people you know get locked away for years.” Evan symbolized that risk when he was arrested on March 29, 2023—for no other reason than his being a journalist. We honor Evan for his dedication to his profession. Paul Beckett, award-winning journalist at the The Wall Street Journal, stepped down as head of its Washington Bureau to lead the global public outrage at the arrest of Evan Gershkovich and the efforts to secure his release. We honor Paul for his commitment to Evan and to his committed passion to journalism and to the practice of unrestricted and responsible journalism everywhere. We look forward to recognizing Evan and Paul, with Paul accepting the award on Evan's behalf, at the upcoming Dinner and Awards for Ethical Leadership. 2024 Business Fellow Marissa Guiang wrote a thoughtful reflection on her Fellowship experience for the Bernstein Center for Leadership and Ethics at Columbia Business School. Read it at the link below.
As a follow-up to my fellowship trip to Germany and Poland with FASPE (Fellowships at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics), I published a blog piece for The Bernstein Center for Leadership and Ethics / Columbia Business School on the valuable lessons I learned from what was a deeply moving, yet simultaneously educational, theoretical, and practical experience. One of the biggest takeaways that I've been reflecting on lately (especially in today's divided, polarizing society) is that empathy and learning do not have to equate to agreement. We can practice empathy and humanity towards individuals and communities who prioritize different values without betraying what is important to ourselves. Too often we reserve the basic notions of empathy, kindness, grace, and respect for those who sit in the same echo chambers with us. What would dialogue look like if we approached difficult conversations with the goal of learning rather than convincing and combating? Avoidance of difficult conversations is often a disservice to the self. Read the blog piece here: https://lnkd.in/gDaCPn3v. Curious to know your thoughts!
