📸 Member Spotlight: Meet Ian Thayer, a PA native building his career and future right here in West Virginia! As a 2x graduate of West Virginia University and proud member of the First Ascent program, Ian has embraced the opportunity to thrive through remote and hybrid work while staying connected to the community and outdoor lifestyle he loves: "In my interview, one question asked was, ‘do you have any concerns about staying in the state of West Virginia?’ To which I replied, ‘I think this state gives me more reasons to stay, than reasons to leave.’ This state has provided me with so much over the years, and I only feel that it is right for me to give back in some way.” Through First Ascent, an initiative of the Brad and Alys Smith Outdoor Economic Development Collaborative helping our grads stay in state, Ian isn't just working remotely — he’s building a vibrant life and contributing to the growth of WV. Want to join Ian and make your mark in West Virginia? Apply to First Ascent and find out how hybrid and remote work can empower your career while keeping you close to home. I am thrilled to share my experience as a mentor from the Ascend WV / First Ascent program, a remarkable initiative aimed at helping recent graduates navigate the complexities of employment, remote work, and life after college. As part of this program, I have the pleasure of mentoring Ian Thayer, a First Ascent program member. Ascend WV is designed to bring out-of-state talent to West Virginia, leveraging the state's natural beauty and community spirit to create remote work opportunities. This initiative aims to attract and retain professionals who can contribute to the state's economic growth and vibrant communities. On the other hand, First Ascent focuses on keeping West Virginia talent in the state graduation. By cultivating a hub for hybrid and remote workers, First Ascent provides recent graduates with the tools they need to thrive in their early careers. Ian's involvement with First Ascent is a testament to his dedication to being a force for good in our beautiful mountain state. Meeting Ian has been a wonderful experience. He is a truly grounded young individual, full of passion and determination to contribute positively to West Virginia. His commitment to leveraging the opportunities provided by First Ascent is inspiring, and I am honored to support him in his journey. The Ascend WV program emphasizes the importance of mentorship and community support, ensuring that young professionals like Ian have the guidance and resources necessary to succeed. It has been incredibly fulfilling to witness Ian's growth and to be a part of an initiative that aligns so closely with my own values and vision for our state. Together, we are working towards a brighter future for West Virginia, fostering economic growth and building resilient communities where young professionals can live, work, and thrive. On a personal note, I want to thank Trilogy Innovations, Inc. and World Wide Technology Public Sector for supporting my mission and calling in life and to Ryan Ratcliff and Paris Winfrey for selecting me to be part of this process. I have been blessed to work for organizations that are mission-focused and people-oriented! “I want more people to realize that First Ascent does more than just coach you in working remotely, but offers events like camping trips, coworking spaces, and lots of social events to meet other First Ascent members. You’ll never just be stuck in your workspace at home every day.” We love to hear about all the wonderful things our grads are doing across the state!
