Congratulations to the Mauritania octopus - bottom trawl, pot/trap and jig FIP, which recently moved from prospective to active, and is now a comprehensive FIP reporting on FisheryProgress! This FIP is working towards Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification, and has outlined a 5-year plan to address environmental concerns while also committing to social responsibility. Last week at the Conservation Alliance for Seafood Solutions Annual Meeting, FishChoice staff led productive conversations on social responsibility, fishery improvement projects, business engagement in seafood supply chains, and more. Human Rights Transparency Manager Jamie Padilla spearheaded a panel on human rights due diligence, bringing experts together to talk about how combining multiple HRDD tools can have greater impact. Program Director Kristin Sherwood joined a discussion on FIPs and why some stall in their progress, and how actors throughout the supply chain can intervene to get them back on track. Takeaways from the Annual Meeting will inform our work moving forward, and it's always invaluable gathering with colleagues in person. Until next year!

FishChoice is fresh off the heels of the Conservation Alliance for Seafood Solutions Annual Meeting, which was held in Cancun last week. After four days convening with colleagues and partners from the sustainable seafood landscape, we're brimming with ideas and invigorated drive for improvement projects, social responsibility and human rights, supply chain solutions, and more. Thank you to the Alliance team for a wonderful week, and we're already looking forward to next year!

Mexico is one of the most active countries on FisheryProgress. A key factor in these FIPs' success is industry investment, and they are quick to talk about how this is such a game changer. Just ask FIP implementers such as Comunidad y Biodiversidad A.C., COMEPESCA AC, and Cedepesca. Check out more from this earlier story in SeafoodSource about why investing in small-scale fisheries pays off.

We're thrilled to announce that we've created a blog for FisheryProgress, where we'll be featuring stories from fishery improvement projects around the world. Our first article follows two FIPs in Chile that went inactive after the HRSR Policy was implemented in 2021, but have found an ingenious solution to fulfill some of the policy requirements: a chatbot through WhatsApp. Spearheaded by ONG Pesca Sustentable, the unique tech innovation is a novel approach to grievance mechanisms, connecting fishers directly to the resources they need to ensure a safe work environment. Read more in the full story below.

The FishChoice human rights and social responsibility team joined the Asia Pacific FIP Community of Practice Workshop last week in Bali, convening with fishers and stakeholders on ways in which worker engagement in human rights and social policies can transform the seafood sector. Jamie Padilla and Melissa Luna shared best practices in the HRSR space to lay groundwork for a new future of global fisheries – one in which every voice is heard and every worker is valued and respected.

FisheryProgress is excited to announce a new pilot project with three key FIPs that aims to deepen the impact of the HRSR Policy through robust fisher engagement. These FIPs span unique geographies and cover a range of fisheries, from large scale commercial to artisanal. Our hope is that outcomes from this project will serve as a model for other FIPs, and that we will have codesigned resources and tools to share broadly across the sustainable seafood sector.
