Earlier this month, Carlos Ramirez (GSA Country Coordinator - Latin America) represented GSA and Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) at ExpoMar 2024 in Santa Catarina, Brazil! The event provided a platform to understand firsthand how aquaculture and wild-caught fisheries are growing in Brazil, and how these activities are focusing on human welfare in local communities. Artisanal and commercial fisheries are important activity in Santa Catarina, Brazil; and both are involved with processing plants working to produce the best final products to the market. #WhereInTheWorldIsGSA #BAPCertified #ForTheLoveOfSeafood 📍 Santa Catarina, Brazil 🇧🇷

Global projections show fish biomass could drop more than 10% in many regions by mid-century if greenhouse gas emissions stay high. “Understanding the potential impacts of climate change on marine ecosystems and their fisheries, and their associated uncertainties, is crucial to design adaptation programs at appropriate scales,” said Manuel Barange, FAO Assistant Director-General and Director of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Division. “Lower emissions significantly reduce end-of-century biomass losses for nearly all countries and territories compared to the high-emissions scenario. This highlights the benefits of climate change mitigation measures for fisheries and aquatic foods.”

The United Nations has endorsed new Guidelines for Sustainable Aquaculture from the (U.S.) National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which aim to develop global aquaculture best practices. As an aquaculture science and policy leader, NOAA played a key role in shaping the new guidelines. NOAA experts worked to ensure that the needs of North American aquaculture sectors were represented, while also considering the needs of countries worldwide.

Congratulations to the U.S. Gulf of Mexico shrimp fishery on achieving RFM Certification!
July 15, 2024, Juneau, AK – The Certified Seafood Collaborative (CSC) is pleased to announce that the U.S. Gulf of Mexico shrimp fishery (white, brown, and pink shrimp) for all five Gulf states and federal waters has achieved Responsible Fisheries Management (RFM) Certification. This is the first shrimp fishery certified to the RFM Standard. RFM Certification requires fisheries meet RFM Standard criteria which evaluate fisheries in four key areas: A) the fisheries management system; B) science and stock assessment activities, and the precautionary approach; C) management measures, implementation, monitoring, and control; and D) serious impacts of the fishery on the ecosystem. Third-party certification body Global Trust awarded the certification after a thorough evaluation of the Gulf of Mexico Shrimp fishery as reported in the Final Assessment Report. “Congratulations to the American Shrimp Processors Association (ASPA) and the entire Gulf of Mexico shrimp industry for meeting RFM’s comprehensive fishery standard. As the largest shrimp fishery in the U.S., it’s a testament to its sound fisheries management and commitment to the sustainability of their fishery,” said Mark Fina, CSC RFM Board Chair. Earning RFM Certification shows the fishery’s commitment to the long-term health of the Gulf shrimp ecosystem, the communities that depend on it, and the customers seeking sustainable seafood.
