The Art Basel and UBS Survey of Global Collecting 2024 by Arts Economics is published today, offering key insights into high-net-worth individuals' (HNWIs) behaviors and attitudes in the art world. Authored by cultural economist Dr. Clare McAndrew, this comprehensive survey gathers data on art collectors' spending patterns, motivations, and engagement with galleries, artists, and institutions. Key findings include signs of stable spending, increased strategic collecting, a decline in impulse buying, strong support for emerging galleries and artists, insights into wealth transfer between generations, and 91% of HNWIs surveyed expressing optimism despite a complex market. This 2024 survey, the largest to date, gathered responses from over 3,600 HNWIs in 14 markets including Brazil, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mainland China, Mexico, Singapore, Switzerland, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Our dear friend Refik Anadol is launching "Dataland," the world’s first museum of AI-generated art, in downtown Los Angeles along the iconic Grand Avenue corridor, home to MOCA LA, The Broad, and Walt Disney Concert Hall. Having previewed the space at The Grand, developed by Related California, with Anadol earlier this year, I can say it will be spectacular and a singular museum experience. Spanning 20,000 square feet with four galleries designed by Gensler, the museum will offer immersive, AI-powered experiences. Anadol describes it as a "living museum," where AI models create art from data sourced from institutions like the Smithsonian and the Natural History Museum. Visitors will not only see the art but also experience AI-driven scents, creating a multi-sensory journey. *Dataland* will also feature blockchain art sales and a nonprofit arm focused on ethical AI research.
