The Stuart Collection at UC San Diego has announced the inaugural Emerging Artists Program, bringing together a diverse group of contemporary creatives to expand the storied public art collection. RojoNegro, Max Hooper Schneider, and Precious Okoyomon have been selected to create permanent, site-specific works on the university’s campus. “We’re bringing in artists that have a language that will hopefully connect with what's going on on this campus around issues like social justice and climate change, identity and representation—all themes that had not been weaved into the collection in an explicit way,” told Jessica Berlanga Taylor, Curator & Director of the Stuart Collection, to The Art Newspaper. Tonight marks Zegna's celebration of VISIBLE in Art Basel, a project by Fondazione Ermenegildo Zegna and Cittadellarte - Fondazione Pistoletto ONLUS. An international production fellowship originating from the visionary idea of the artist Michelangelo Pistoletto, VISIBLE researches and supports artworks in the social sphere. Its activation during Art Basel underscores ZEGNA’s commitment to global arts, cultural heritage, and cutting-edge commissions. ZEGNA advances the arts through commissions by artists who create works focused on the brand’s values. In its Milan headquarters, art weaves the story of ZEGNA’s success, identity, and heritage; “Woolen—The Reinstate Apple” by Michelangelo Pistoletto references the authenticity of ZEGNA’s partners and the sustainability of its wool. In recent years site-specific commissions by contemporary artists like Daniel Buren, Dan Graham, and Roman Signer have enriched the wool mill and the surrounding Oasi Zegna with new permanent public works of art. Globally, ZEGNA has commissioned artists, including Graham Sutherland, Not Vital, and Kiki Smith, to create wool trophies—a nod to Zegna’s commitment to sourcing the highest quality wool and its beginning as a textile company in 1910. “[Arlene Shechet] will reach something of a career crescendo,” wrote Nancy Hass for The New York Times this past Sunday. It’s just one remark amongst many others that highlights the indomitable artist, Arlene Shechet, who will debut her solo exhibition, "Arlene Shechet: Girl Group" at Storm King Art Center this weekend. An exhibition of six monumental, vividly colored sculptures will adorn Storm King’s rolling hills through the summer, beckoning visitors to stand in awe of the 20 to 30-foot works. “Arlene’s work is bold and audacious, and visitors will certainly feel the pulse of the new sculptures she has created for Storm King across our landscape,” says Nora Lawrence, Storm King’s Artistic Director and Chief Curator. Indoors, Storm King’s Museum Building galleries will display Shechet’s pandemic-era "Together" series which inspired the larger commissions outdoors. "Arlene Shechet: Girl Group" will be on view May 4–November 10, 2024, accompanied by a robust calendar of public programs, including an outdoor performance produced in collaboration with Shechet. The exhibition is co-curated by Storm King’s Artistic Director and Chief Curator Nora Lawrence and Associate Curator Eric Booker, with Adela Goldsmith, Curatorial Assistant.
