Last week, The Maine Seafood Promotional Council hosted “On the (Seafood) Menu in Maine,” their inaugural event celebrating Maine’s diverse seafood. 🌊 Prominent chefs from across the country gathered in South Portland, starting at Mr. Tuna’s kitchen, where Chef Jordan Rubin demonstrated fresh tuna preparation. Guests then enjoyed a curated seafood experience at SoPo Seafood Market, featuring monkfish stew (Maine Coast Fishermen's Association), oysters (Mere Point Oyster Company), mussels (Bangs Island Mussels), unagi (American Unagi), scallops (Downeast Dayboat), seaweed (Atlantic Sea Farms), and lobster bánh mì (Fishermen's Net). This event fostered collaboration and inspired creative seafood preparation, all while supporting opportunities for Maine seafood producers to reach new markets! 🌱 🧬 The growth of Maine's food and bioscience economies is at the heart of our mission, but how do they connect? Individually, these sectors both have high potential for growth and are fueled by Maine’s abundant natural resources. Together, the possibilities are endless. 🚀 With the help of our partners and some of Maine's brightest entrepreneurs, we’re shaping the future of Maine’s economy. #maine #foodeconomy #bioeconomy #innovation
Seafood Economy 🔄 Bioeconomy. Let’s take a moment mid #SeafoodMonth to highlight the growing connection between Maine’s seafood economy and the bioeconomy. There are so many exciting ways to add value to marine living resources that have long been at the heart of our food system. Take Marin Skincare, for example—they’re turning lobster processing waste (yes, lobster!) into an innovative skincare product that helps soothe dry and damaged skin. Who knew that lobster, in addition to being delicious and pinchy, could be moisturizing? This is what happens when forward-thinking food system partners team up with bioscience entrepreneurs! Here at NEOC, we’re grateful to collaborate with organizations like FocusMaine and Maine Center for Entrepreneurs, helping startups dive into these kinds of opportunities. It’s an exciting time for innovation, and we’re excited to keep riding the wave! #Foodeconomy #Bioeconomy #SeafoodToSkincare #OceanInnovation
