About us
A Permanent Observer to the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, For All Moonkind, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that seeks to work with the United Nations and the international community to protect each of the six human lunar landing and similar sites in outer space as part of our common human heritage. Our entirely volunteer leadership team includes space lawyers and policymakers from around the world who have come together to draft an international agreement to manage the preservation of our cultural heritage in outer space. For All Moonkind's Institute on Space Law and Ethics promotes the articulation and development of an ethical foundation and framework for responsible space behavior. In so doing, the Institute seeks to reduce the potential for conflict and assure the sustainable exploration and use of space and its resources for the benefit of all humankind. Our expansion into space affords humanity a unique opportunity to improve the human condition and set a better example for future generations. To be successful, space governance, including the interpretation of current space treaties, must be informed by ethical considerations. The Institute serves as a platform for the exchange and innovation of ideas regarding law, morality, and ethics, amplifying diverse thoughts and opinions on the future of humanity in space. The Institute produces robust research and analysis on the myriad of complex legal and ethical issues emanating from humanity’s transition to a multiplanetary and truly spacefaring species. The Institute aims to raise public awareness of, broaden civil discourse on, and encourage public support for space activities.

🇺🇳 #BREAKING Heads of State from 193 countries just agreed the Pact for the Future. It notes the importance of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (#COPUOS) to address active debris removal, space traffic & space resources, & encouraged a #UNISPACEIV conference in 2027. COPUOS’ work, over the last 65 years to deliver global space governance, underpins today’s global space economy & is evolving to respond to the urgent needs concerning space sustainability & solutions. 👀 Here’s what the Pact says about the peaceful uses of space: 🌐 We will strengthen international cooperation for the exploration and use of outer space for peaceful purposes and for the benefit of all humanity. The Outer Space Treaty of 1967 identifies outer space as the province of all humankind. Humanity’s reliance on space is increasing day-by-day and the Outer Space Treaty must be recognized as the cornerstone of the international legal regime governing outer space activities. We are living through an age of increased access and activities in outer space. The growth in the number of objects in outer space, the return of humans to deep space, and our expanding reliance on outer space systems demands urgent action. Safe and sustainable use of space plays a critical role in the achievement of the 2030 Agenda. The opportunities for people and planet are enormous, but there are also risks that must be managed. We encourage the COPUOS to further consult on the proposal to hold a fourth United Nations Conference on the Peaceful Exploration of Outer Space (UNISPACE IV) in 2027. We decide to: a) Reaffirm the importance of the widest possible adherence to and full compliance with the 1967 Outer Space Treaty and discuss the establishment of new frameworks for space traffic, space debris, and space resources through the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space. b) Invite the engagement of relevant private sector, civil society, and other relevant stakeholders, where appropriate and applicable, to contribute to intergovernmental processes related to the increased safety and sustainability of outer space. ♻️🛰 What next for #SpaceSustainability? #UNOOSA is: 1️⃣ Supporting States on the implentation of space law, policy & governance (see case studies here: https://lnkd.in/eRhgzVQP) 2️⃣ Leveraging industry experience to inform deliberations of COPUOS on STM, ADR, etc, to ensure delegates can better respond to proposals 3️⃣ Levelling the playing field in terms of understanding the components of STM through capacity-building for Member States 4️⃣ Completing, updating, & making operationally relevant the list of Points of Contacts started in 2019 pursuant to the LTS Guidelines 5️⃣ Convening operational experts from industry & government to develop a shared understanding of needs & possible consensus 6️⃣ Working to secure a market for ADR to incentivise investment, scale solutions, & stimulate interaction on associated issues such as cost #OurCommonFuture

Our co-founder Michelle L.D. Hanlon had the honor to present at the Museum of Flight yesterday on the topic of "Who Owns Outer Space." Per the Outer Space Treaty, space is the "Province of all humankind." What does that mean? It means that we all have an obligation and responsibility to assure that we explore and utilize the vast resources of space in a sustainable way. Understanding how to behave in space starts with (of course) safeguarding our most precious resource: our cultural heritage. We owe it to our common ancestors who walked across the plains of Laetoli Tanzania, and we owe it to the future of humanity. #ProtectTheBootprints

A couple of weeks ago, co-founder Michelle L.D. Hanlon spent a few days Space Center Houston participating in the National Park Service, National Center for Preservation Technology and Training, conference on Preserving the Race for Space. HUGE thank you to Catherine Cooper for organizing both an incredible session AND an INCREDIBLE tour of Johnson Space Center, including the Neutral Buoyance Lab, the restored Apollo Mission Control Room AND a once-in-a-lifetime picture at Mission Control! This important conference highlights the amazing work that people are doing here on Earth to safeguard, preserve and restore cultural artifacts related to human exploration of space from spacesuits to Moon rocks and everything in between. We are so grateful that NCPTT recognizes the need to look beyond Earth to protect and preserve as well. Preservation of cultural heritage is not just the right thing to do, it is the first step to avoiding, or at least mitigating the risk of conflict in space, and ultimately bringing peace to humanity. We are an incredible species at an incredible crossroads, the survival of all we know on Earth is in our hands. #ProtectTheBootprints #FirstStepsToPeace
