  • 🚀 Space is more congested than ever, with over 10,500 operational satellites currently orbiting Earth—and this number is expected to soar beyond 100,000 by 2030. As space activity grows, so do the challenges of ensuring safety and sustainability. Our Director, Aarti Holla-Maini, contributed to the World Economic Forum Space Situational Awareness (SSA) Data and Information Sharing Principles, a key paper that addresses how better coordination and data-sharing among space actors can help mitigate the risks of space congestion and collisions. 🌍🛰️ Here are some key takeaways: 1️⃣ Enhancing data-sharing practices: Improved data-sharing between SSA providers and satellite operators—particularly for satellite ephemerides and planned maneuvers—is critical for reducing collision risks and increasing the accuracy of conjunction warnings. 2️⃣ Strengthening coordination among SSA providers: As the number of SSA providers grows worldwide, better communication and cooperation are essential to align collision predictions, reduce conflicting information, and support a unified global space traffic management approach. 🌐🤝 3️⃣ Implementing standardized data formats and procedures: Adopting international standards, like those in the Guidelines for the Long-Term Sustainability of Outer Space Activities (#LTSGuidelines), is vital for consistent, reliable SSA data-sharing. This will help improve global efforts to manage the increasingly congested space environment. 📊🌱 📄 Read the full paper and discover how these principles are shaping the future of space governance. #SpaceSustainability #COPUOS

🌍🚀 UNOOSA did its very own 'Night at the Museum’ on Saturday at the American Museum of Natural History, focusing on Space for Sustainable Development Goals. This official side event of the Summit of the Future brought together world leaders to explore the pivotal role space plays in tackling some of today’s most urgent challenges.   An immersive experience at the Hayden Planetarium, with cutting-edge dome projections, showcased planetary data and climate insights. This unique perspective demonstrated how space exploration and Earth observation are driving innovative solutions for climate resilience, disaster risk reduction, and sustainable development.   🇦🇹🇿🇲🇹🇴🇸🇪🇨🇴🇸🇦🇩🇪 We were privileged to receive and hear from distinguished speakers, including the Hon. Fekitamoeloa Utoikamanu, Tongan Minister of Meteorology, Energy, Information, Disaster Management, Environment, Climate Change and Communications; H.E. Ebba Busch, Vice Prime Minister of Sweden; Bill Nelson, NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration Administrator; David Zapolsky, Senior Vice President, Global Public Policy & General Counsel, Amazon; Mauricio Lizcano, Minister of Information Technologies and Communications, Colombia, H.E. Dr. Mohammed Altamimi, Vice Chairman and CEO, وكالة الفضاء السعودية | Saudi Space Agency; and H.E. Dr. Jörg Kukies, State Secretary at the Federal Chancellery, Germany.    Throughout the evening, speakers and guests delved into critical topics, including the role of space in fostering global #connectivity, the need for #SpaceTraffic coordination, and the growing space’s potential to drive innovation and equitable development. The discussion highlighted the necessity of international collaboration leveraging space technologies and scaling solutions.   We extend our gratitude to our co-hosts and sponsors for making this event possible: the American Museum of Natural History, Amazon, the Business Council for International Understanding (BCIU), and the Governments of Austria and Zambia.   #GlobalGoals #OurCommonFuture #OurCommonAgenda #COPUOS #SDGs #SummitoftheFuture

🇺🇳 #BREAKING Heads of State from 193 countries just agreed the Pact for the Future. It notes the importance of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (#COPUOS) to address active debris removal, space traffic & space resources, & encouraged a #UNISPACEIV conference in 2027. COPUOS’ work, over the last 65 years to deliver global space governance, underpins today’s global space economy & is evolving to respond to the urgent needs concerning space sustainability & solutions. 👀 Here’s what the Pact says about the peaceful uses of space: 🌐 We will strengthen international cooperation for the exploration and use of outer space for peaceful purposes and for the benefit of all humanity. The Outer Space Treaty of 1967 identifies outer space as the province of all humankind. Humanity’s reliance on space is increasing day-by-day and the Outer Space Treaty must be recognized as the cornerstone of the international legal regime governing outer space activities. We are living through an age of increased access and activities in outer space. The growth in the number of objects in outer space, the return of humans to deep space, and our expanding reliance on outer space systems demands urgent action. Safe and sustainable use of space plays a critical role in the achievement of the 2030 Agenda. The opportunities for people and planet are enormous, but there are also risks that must be managed. We encourage the COPUOS to further consult on the proposal to hold a fourth United Nations Conference on the Peaceful Exploration of Outer Space (UNISPACE IV) in 2027. We decide to: a) Reaffirm the importance of the widest possible adherence to and full compliance with the 1967 Outer Space Treaty and discuss the establishment of new frameworks for space traffic, space debris, and space resources through the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space. b) Invite the engagement of relevant private sector, civil society, and other relevant stakeholders, where appropriate and applicable, to contribute to intergovernmental processes related to the increased safety and sustainability of outer space. ♻️🛰 What next for #SpaceSustainability? #UNOOSA is: 1️⃣ Supporting States on the implentation of space law, policy & governance (see case studies here: https://lnkd.in/eRhgzVQP) 2️⃣ Leveraging industry experience to inform deliberations of COPUOS on STM, ADR, etc, to ensure delegates can better respond to proposals 3️⃣ Levelling the playing field in terms of understanding the components of STM through capacity-building for Member States 4️⃣ Completing, updating, & making operationally relevant the list of Points of Contacts started in 2019 pursuant to the LTS Guidelines 5️⃣ Convening operational experts from industry & government to develop a shared understanding of needs & possible consensus 6️⃣ Working to secure a market for ADR to incentivise investment, scale solutions, & stimulate interaction on associated issues such as cost #OurCommonFuture
