Oh hello, July — it’s UV Safety Awareness Month! Did you know UV light exposure causes most skin cancers? To protect yourself from the sun’s powerful rays and other harmful effects of UV radiation, follow these three rules: ☀️ Always wear protective clothing when you’re out in the sun — think hats, long-sleeved shirts, pants, coverups, and sunglasses. ☀️Limit your sun exposure and seek shade when you can, especially during the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. ☀️ Don’t leave the house without generously applying broad-spectrum, water resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.

This Memorial Day, as we honor the brave souls who gave everything for our freedom, it's important to also educate on melanoma risk for veterans. Depending on the environment and role of soldiers, they can be at a higher risk for advanced stage melanoma. This risk is a result of sun exposure, geographical deployments, occupational hazards, lack of sun protection resources, and delayed or limited access to healthcare.
