Day #1 of the National 8(a) Small Business Conference is a wrap! It was great connecting with SBA’s Jackson Brossy, Assistant Administrator of the Office of Native American Affairs, and we can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings.

Our Tribe, the Poarch Band of Creek Indians, had the privilege of hosting Department of Interior Secretary Deb Haaland for a tour of the reservation and holding several meetings with Tribal Leaders. This is a great honor to our Tribe and its people.
Tribal Chair & CEO Stephanie Bryan was honored to host U.S. Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland in a landmark visit to our Alabama reservation. Alongside staff members of the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), Secretary Haaland’s tour included pivotal Poarch Creek community sites and a variety of cultural showcases. Secretary Haaland’s visit spanned an array of facilities and programs on our Reservation. From meeting our Tribal Elders at the Tribe’s Assisted Living Facility and Senior Activities Center with a tour led by Martha Gookin, Elder Services Division Director, to an in-depth, guided tour of our history museum led by Tribal Vice Chairman Robbie McGhee. Health Director Kelly Dirting led the Secretary’s tour of our Medical Center, highlighting our healthcare advancements. The Secretary also engaged with the vibrant future of our Tribe at our Poarch Creek Community Center with a tour led by Karla Dawson, Community Services Division Director, witnessing a Mvskoke language presentation by our preschool children, meeting Tribal princesses, observing one of our preschool learning classrooms, and enjoying a traditional stickball game. We’re grateful for this opportunity to discuss ongoing initiatives and share our journey with federal partners. Secretary Haaland’s dedication to Tribal Nations and her active involvement in Indian Country reforms are invaluable. A special thank you to Secretary Haaland for her visit and for experiencing the heartbeat of the Poarch Creek community. Read the press release here: https://ow.ly/IPMt50Qrwe8
