For Inside Philanthropy, here's a look at data from the new Independent Sector/#UnitedforALICE report, an August survey from the Federal Reserve Board, and of course a look back to the work done last year by the National Council of Nonprofits on the #nonprofithiringcrisis. Taken together, these reports paint a troubling picture of the ongoing struggles of nonprofit workers in the face of substandard wages -- and how the resulting hiring issues are damaging nonprofits. From the piece: "Given their size relative to the U.S. government’s, funders could argue that they don’t have that large a role to play in shaping salary levels and capacity in the nonprofit sector. And as the Independent Sector/ALICE report itself shows, nonprofit workers are hardly unique in receiving below-living wages, and are even in better shape than self-employed and the lowest-paid for-profit sector workers. Why should nonprofit worker pay be prioritized? These arguments have merit on their face. They also strike me as cop-outs. Whether or not individual funders’ missions include fighting poverty or boosting working conditions including pay, the facts remain: Nonprofits are struggling to hire and retain workers. That struggle is impacting their missions. Lack of funding, which contributes to below-living-standard wages and overwork, thanks to understaffing, is a key factor determining how many staff nonprofits can hire and how long they can retain them. The equation is a simple one: No people equals no programs." #philanthropy Jamie Allison Rick Cohen Nina Ford Dr. Akilah Watkins Christine Aromando Fund the People Crappy Funding Practices

Changing the story about what it means to be social impact professionals: Funding models to put the nonprofit workforce front and center 👉 DYK? California's nonprofit workforce makes up one out of 14 employees in the state. Yet one percent or less of foundation grant dollars go to grantee staff development and 1 percent or less of nonprofit budgets go toward staff development. Catalyst was pleased to partner with Fund the People and The Nonprofit Institute for a #TalentJustice dialogue about the need and value of investing in the nonprofit workforce for funders, nonprofits, and intermediaries in San Diego. Here are some of the bright ideas that resonated with our team and the folks in attendance: 💡 A central challenge in 'talent justice' is that traditional HR approaches people as resources for Compliance & Risk Management, as opposed to People & Culture, which focuses on investing in people. 💡 Talent investment: What if we imagined a new type of grant alongside Project Grants and General Operating Support? Enter: Staff Operating Support. This is not supplementary to a main grant, but rather a core grant to build an organization, to be used as they see fit. 💡 Let's start from a vision of what a healthy, thriving workplace looks like, then design and fund solutions toward that goal. The social sector has not fully embraced and articulated our worth. If we can do that, we can claim that value and what is needed to achieve it. On behalf of Fund the People, I want to take a moment to appreciate three people: NPAG consultants Phuong Quach and Krystle Chipman, and Greta Consulting principal Rebecca Schumer. Together with me (Rusty Stahl), they successfully organized an incredible series of #SiloBusting dialogues on #TalentJustice in San Diego, Los Angeles, and Northern California! It was fun and inspirational to be “on the road” together with these wonderful colleagues, listening and learning with 130 amazing leaders from nonprofits, philanthropies, and intermediaries from across geographic, role, and issue silos. These regional conversations will definitely help to fuel learning, participation, and momentum of our statewide California Talent Justice Summit this December! Thank you Phuong, Rebecca, and Krystle for making it happen! - Rusty
