There is something so, so special about feeling like you're standing on your own soapbox, tirelessly advocating for change... and then suddenly finding people who are standing on similar soapboxes and are ready to put our collective passion and power into action ✊🏽
Thank you Rusty Stahl and the Fund the People team for being my soapbox people. I experienced so much JOY being in the room with you alongside our incredibly resilient San Diego nonprofit community (so good to see and meet Samuel Tsoi, Laura Deitrick, Shantel Suárez Ávila, Claire Groebner, Dan Mueller, Bryan Cardenas, Nicole Lillie, Elly Brown, Bina M Patel, Janine Mason, MA, ACNP, Elsa Morales-Roth, Christine Roberts, Marty Remmell, Emily Young, Cristina Sanchez-Kerr, Danny Kim, PhD, Barbara Orozco-Valdivia, MPH Taylor Mauriello (Harrell), Ph.D.)!!!
Here are my key takeaways from our community conversation:
1️⃣ We need to practice #belonging in the fight for talent justice and talent equity. Aka, let's stop blaming. Let's stop othering. We gotta do it together.
2️⃣ Professional development MUST go beyond investing in top leaders who have "desired skills" that are rooted in white supremacy (e.g., degrees, certifications). We HAVE to invest in and nourish people who are sharing the brilliance of their lived experience.
3️⃣ Wellbeing funding needs to be a fully integrated, main ingredient of all strategy work. Wellbeing bandaids can only do so much!
4️⃣ For my fellow grant writers, and for all of my grant-making friends: let's talk about SOS grants (staff operating support). Restricted funding that exclusively supports the needs of staff.
5️⃣ Let's end the nonprofit starvation cycle and help organizations establish healthy demands for their work. Let's change the story about what it means to be social impact professionals. Let's put our workforce front and center!
