We work with local governments & communities to accelerate progress and inspire systemic change.

About us

FUSE is dedicated to freeing our country from the social and economic barriers to opportunities that have been perpetuated by a history of systemic and institutionalized racism. We partner with local governments and communities to more effectively address pressing challenges by placing experienced professionals in local government agencies. These FUSE Executive Fellows lead strategic projects that are designed to accelerate progress and advance racial equity. We are also dedicated to sharing the insights that emerge from our work to inspire all civic leaders to think and act differently in their efforts to achieve systemic change. Our work focuses on issues such as affordable housing and homelessness; workforce training and living-wage jobs; pandemic response and health equity; education reform and digital access; public safety and justice reform; climate resilience and green infrastructure; and more. FUSE has worked on over 250 projects in 42 cities and counties across 18 states serving a combined population of 25 million people. The majority of our alumni continue to work in civic leadership and nearly all our government partners return each year with requests for additional projects.

As a FUSE Executive Fellow, Wesley E. Myrick (2021-22) worked with the City of Atlanta Mayor’s Office to shape and implement critical initiatives aimed at mitigating the displacement of Black and low-income communities. He supported the launch of the Faith-Based Development Initiative that created a pipeline of community organizations seeking to leverage city, county, and state resources to accelerate their development process and meet the city’s demand for housing its legacy residents. He also bolstered public-private partnerships by creating peer-to-peer exchanges. He influenced the reform of Urban Enterprise Zone legislation and the Inclusionary Zoning Ordinance legislation, both of which address leveraging developer incentives to create diverse housing in communities experiencing economic divestment and displacement. Additionally, Myrick contributed to the City’s formation of deeper tenant protection legislation and the configuration of the City’s first affordable housing trust fund. After his fellowship, Myrick joined the City of Atlanta Mayor’s Office as a Senior Policy Analyst to continue the work he started as a FUSE Executive Fellow. #FUSEAlum #FUSEAlumniSuccess #CityofAtlanta #AffordableHousing #beyondFUSE

Great community engagement tips from FUSE Executive Fellow Fred Clay, MBA, PMP, ENV SP!

One week ago today marked the final Hayward Downtown Summer Street Party, a festive event filled with live music, food vendors, and representatives from various City Departments and Divisions. It was the perfect backdrop for engaging with the community, and I was able to collect surveys from marginalized residents while promoting the health benefits of biking for personal health and environmental sustainability. With Hayward’s population being over 50% people of color, connecting with equity-priority communities is crucial for driving the cultural shift needed to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through active transportation. Here are three key tips for communicating and connecting with hard-to-reach populations: 1) Listen actively and without bias, ensuring voices are truly heard. 2) Be culturally sensitive and adaptable, recognizing the unique needs and barriers of each community. 3) Build trust through consistent engagement, showing a genuine investment in their well-being. The City of Hayward is making strides with its Climate Action Plan and Vision Zero, and these efforts are helping to make the City safer and healthier for all. Watch this video to hear what a local resident had to say about Hayward’s active transportation infrastructure! #EquityInAction #SustainableCommunities #ActiveTransportation #OutreachEngagement
