What does a bag of potato chips have to do with the #ClimateCrisis? More than you think. From synthetic fertilizers to plastic packaging, fossil fuels are deeply embedded in industrial food production. A Civil Eats op-ed by our Executive Director Anna Lappé exposes how oil and gas giants are using #FoodSystems to entrench their control even as the world pushes for decarbonization. Consider this: At least 15% of global fossil fuel consumption comes from the food sector, with production, processing, transport, packaging and retail driving emissions. Yet, food-related fossil fuel use is often hidden in national emissions reporting. We break down these connections—and what to do about them—in six episodes of the #FueltoFork podcast. Tune in to learn how we can build food systems free from fossil fuel dependence. 🎙️ Listen to Fuel to Fork, co-produced with IPES-Food & TABLE: bit.ly/fueltofork 🔗 Read Anna’s op-ed in Civil Eats: https://lnkd.in/e3tNj2zF #ClimateCrisis #FossilFreeFood #FutureofFood

"There is simply no way to meet the goals of the #ParisAgreement without dramatic reductions in emissions from agriculture, forestry, and other land use." Food and farming systems drive one-third of global emissions—yet they remain sidelined in climate negotiations. As #COP30 heads to the Amazon, the opportunity is clear: sustainable agricultural practices could cut 10-12 billion tonnes of CO₂ annually and help protect the world’s forests. But we need real commitments—not just words. Read more in Climate Home News: https://lnkd.in/dgNbEhQA #COP30 #FoodSystems #ClimateAction

Fossil fuel companies are ramping up their control in industrial food systems—through fertilizers, pesticides, plastic packaging, and more. A new Civil Eats op-ed by Anna Lappé reveals how oil and gas giants are using agriculture as an escape hatch for petrochemicals, even as other sectors move to decarbonize. The numbers are staggering: By 2050, half of all oil and gas could be used for petrochemicals, with a major share fueling industrial food production. Meanwhile, synthetic fertilizers, plastic-wrapped ultra-processed foods, and industrial meat production are driving climate change. It's time to rethink how we grow and consume food—and dismantle the power of Big Oil. 🔗 Read the full piece: https://lnkd.in/ehmxiC7n #FoodSystems #ClimateCrisis #FossilFuels
Op-ed: Oil and gas companies, with new federal support, are ramping up production within every aspect of the food chain. If we are to protect ourselves from cataclysmic climate change, we must stop them, writes Anna Lappé, the executive director of the Global Alliance for the Future of Food.

Check out this new piece by colleagues in Alliance magazine, shining a light on small-scale fisher movements fighting for food sovereignty, environmental justice, and their very survival. This op-ed from Meena Nallainathan (Global Alliance for the Future of Food) and Leslie Hatfield (GRACE Communications Foundation) lays it all out. Hope folks give it a read. https://lnkd.in/gyFQdzPN
🌊🐟 Small-scale fishers are frontline defenders of biodiversity, livelihoods, and food sovereignty. Yet, they are often sidelined in decision-making as corporate interests push industrial aquaculture and exploit marine resources. At the World Forum of Fisher Peoples last year, fishers from 30+ countries came together to push back and set out their priorities—demanding real support for fisher-led solutions. In this Alliance magazine op-ed, Meena Nallainathan (Global Alliance for the Future of Food) and Leslie Hatfield (GRACE Communications Foundation) share key takeaways from speaking to fishers at that meeting and explain how philanthropy can listen, learn, and act. 🔗 Read more: https://lnkd.in/eg4Rr3k8 #FoodSovereignty #SmallScaleFishers #EnvironmentalJustice #Philanthropy #WorldForumofFisherPeoples

🐟 “The animals are telling us something long before it happens.” Fishers worldwide are witnessing the climate crisis firsthand—rising sea levels, shifting currents, and species loss. A groundbreaking Nature study confirms what fisher communities have long known: small-scale fisheries are essential for food security, poverty reduction, and climate resilience. Led by 800+ experts across fisheries science, nutrition, governance, and economics, the study asks: Who produces aquatic foods, how, and for whom? The answer is clear—small-scale fishers play a critical role, yet they remain underfunded and overlooked. 🔍 Our Alliance Magazine op-ed explores why donors must support fisher-led solutions to uphold food sovereignty and protect marine ecosystems. 🔗 Read the op-ed by Meena Nallainathan (Global Alliance for the Future of Food), and Leslie Hatfield (GRACE Communications Foundation) in Alliance magazine: https://lnkd.in/eg4Rr3k8 🔗 Read the Nature Magazine study: https://lnkd.in/eqjJbsEm #ClimateJustice #FoodSovereignty #Philanthropy #SmallScaleFishers
🎣 Small-scale fisheries provide nearly 40% of the world’s catch and support 490 million people, yet their impact is often overlooked. A new study, supported by our Alliance member Oak Foundation, highlights their vital role in nutrition, poverty alleviation, and economic growth. These fisheries provide key nutrients, including omega-3s, to 2.3 billion people. Despite their importance, small-scale fishers often lack the rights and support to sustainably manage resources. The study calls for policy action to bolster their role in tackling hunger, poverty, the climate crisis, and #genderequity.
