What does a bag of potato chips have to do with the #ClimateCrisis? More than you think. From synthetic fertilizers to plastic packaging, fossil fuels are deeply embedded in industrial food production. Consider this: At least 15% of global fossil fuel consumption comes from the food sector, with production, processing, transport, packaging and retail driving emissions. Fossil fuel companies are ramping up their control in industrial food systems—through fertilizers, pesticides, plastic packaging, and more. A new Civil Eats op-ed by Anna Lappé reveals how oil and gas giants are using agriculture as an escape hatch for petrochemicals, even as other sectors move to decarbonize. The numbers are staggering: By 2050, half of all oil and gas could be used for petrochemicals, with a major share fueling industrial food production. Meanwhile, synthetic fertilizers, plastic-wrapped ultra-processed foods, and industrial meat production are driving climate change.
