🚀 🏔️Project updates from Innsbruck! On Tuesday, our team members from the Universität Innsbruck Michele Bianchi Janetti Marianna Muchorowska, Calchèra San Giorgio Manuela Carraro Anna Stefani, and Eurac Research Institute for Renewable Energy – Eurac Research Daniel Herrera gathered to discuss the promising progress made on our work package on passive solutions for energy-efficient historic buildings. It was also an opportunity to explore the Universität Innsbruck laboratory facilities. 🤝 Where is this exciting cooperation leading us? 🔬💧First of all, to advance the non-destructive façade characterization At FuturHist, we use portable nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technology to enhance the on-site water absorption measurement setup. It will enable spatial and temporal analysis of water content in material layers, improving the precision of façade diagnostics. 🔎🧱Secondly, to explore sustainable solutions for internal insulation At FuturHist, we evaluate internal insulation systems for building envelope retrofits. These solutions are being stress-tested under controlled indoor conditions in the University of Innsbruck lab. The results will help validate numerical models and optimize sustainable retrofitting strategies. Looking forward to developments ahead!
About us
At FuturHist, we research and test energy-efficient retrofit interventions tailored to historic building typologies. We implement these solutions in real-life demonstration cases in Poland, Spain, Sweden and the UK. We focus on innovative solutions such as bio-based materials, internal insulation systems, window retrofits, HVAC, and RES integration. It is a four-year project that started in January 2024. FuturHist is co-funded by the European Union and the UK Research and Innovation. Views and opinions expressed are however those of the author(s) only and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union or European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency. Neither the European Union nor the granting authority can be held responsible for them.

👉At FuturHist, we are interested in fostering innovations in sustainable building materials. To learn from best practice examples, this week, our experts from Institute for Renewable Energy – Eurac Research Eurac Research Daniel Herrera and Natürlich Bauen Thomas Mathis Kai Längle and Florian Fend took part in a site visit to the Schönthaler factory in the Venosta Valley in South Tyrol (Italy). 🏗Schönthaler, known for its innovative approach, developed a hemp brick that won the Deutscher Nachhaltigkeitspreis 2022. During our discussions, we addressed technical challenges in bio-based brick manufacturing and issues related to recycling, circularity, and supply chains. 🧱Natürlich Bauen brought two prototypes of its bricks, one insulating and one moisture-buffering, and even produced some samples onsite, demonstrating their potential for sustainable construction. 💡It was an excellent experience for us, and we will incorporate this knowledge into our future research on bio-based materials, especially their potential use in historic buildings.

🎬 🎆We are pleased to share the first video from the FuturHist demo case series, filmed at Plaza de la Corredera in Córdoba, one of the city's most emblematic places. The solutions we are researching for this 17th-century building must respect its heritage value, which poses quite a challenge. 🚙Be with us on that journey and get to know our demo case better. 🎦 See the video "Plaza de la Corredera: Unveiling Traditional Andalusian Heating and Cooling Secrets" 👉 https://lnkd.in/dPKMq8mm 🎦 🎤 In the video, Marta Romero and María Bermejo Oroz from Junta de Andalucía, a FuturHist partner, invite you: 🎞 to discover the Plaza de la Corredera unique history and architectural values, 🎞 to learn how the building was constructed, 🎞 to explore some heating and cooling methods used in Andalusia, some of which continue today. ________________ The pictures include behind-the-scenes moments from our video recording. A big thank you to the fantastic team that participated! ________________ More videos about our demo cases will follow soon!

This article is a must for everyone interested in the internal insulation of buildings 👉 "Thermal conductivity of biochar-clay composites for the internal insulation of buildings" by Michele Bianchi Janetti, Martina Krusharova, Florian Fend, Kai Längle and Thomas Mathis. What are the highlights of this artcile? ✅The thermal conductivity of novel biochar-clay composites is measured. ✅Effects of biochar-type and density on the thermal conductivity are investigated. ✅Effects of composite´s temperature and moisture content are investigated. ✅An empirical model of the thermal conductivity is calibrated against measured data. ✅The application of biochar-clay composites as internal insulation is promising. The thermal conductivity of novel biochar-clay composites is measured.
I am pleased to share with you the published article on the thermal conductivity of the biochar-clay material for internal insulation, that I contributed to during my Master thesis at the Unit of Energy Efficient Building at Universität Innsbruck. I would like to express my gratitude to Prof. Michele Bianchi Janetti, as well as the entire team of Natürlich Bauen AT: Kai Längle , Thomas Mathis and Florian Fend for letting me be a part of the CarbonClay project! 😍

🍀We are fortunate to have Søren Dyck-Madsen at FuturHist as a member of the External Advisory Board. 🏥🏨🏤Søren Dyck-Madsen brings exceptional expertise in implementing the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive in Denmark, focusing on achieving a zero-emission building stock efficiently and cost-effectively. 👉These works involve enhancing energy efficiency, improving indoor climate, optimising technical systems, and facilitating the flexible use of energy from various sources, such as electricity for heat pumps and district heating. He also ensures that the energy retrofitting of buildings, whether heritage structures or not, does not inadvertently harm the climate by requiring more new building materials than the energy savings justify. It will be an excellent addition to our research at FuturHist. 🤝Welcome on board, Søren Dyck-Madsen. We look forward to our collaboration! More insights on Søren's experience you'll find 👉 https://lnkd.in/dC4UjRRA
