About us
The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) is a non-partisan American public policy and grantmaking institution dedicated to promoting better understanding and cooperation between North America and Europe on transatlantic and global issues. GMF does this by supporting individuals and institutions working in the transatlantic sphere, by convening leaders and members of the policy and business communities, by contributing research and analysis on transatlantic topics, and by providing exchange opportunities to foster renewed commitment to the transatlantic relationship. In addition, GMF supports a number of initiatives to strengthen democracies. Founded in 1972 through a gift from Germany as a permanent memorial to Marshall Plan assistance, GMF maintains a strong presence on both sides of the Atlantic. In addition to its headquarters in Washington, DC, GMF has six offices in Europe: Berlin, Paris, Brussels, Belgrade, Ankara, and Bucharest. GMF also has smaller representations in Bratislava, Turin, and Stockholm.

🇪🇺 The European Parliament and its committees held their constituting sessions in the past two weeks with far right MEPs across three political groups eyeing positions. ⚖️The balance so far: the new groups, Patriots for Europe and the Europe of Sovereign Nations, remained behind the cordon sanitaire for now (a few vice chairs are still to be elected though), while the European Conservatives and Reformists grabbed 13 positions across 11 committees and 2 sub-committees. 7 out of these ended up with representatives of Meloni's undoubtedly radical right Brothers of Italy! The second largest ECR faction, that of Law and Justice, only got 1 position. ⚠️This signals the (continued) selective use of the cordon sanitaire against the far right, the normalization of parts of its radical right parties on the European level (Meloni came a very long way...), but also an interesting shift in the power dynamic between FdI and PiS now that the latter is out of government. We discussed some of this in our short take with Vassilis Ntousas for the German Marshall Fund of the United States. https://lnkd.in/eSsVN_zh
