Alignment via consensus is dangerous. Avoid it at all costs. I didn't get alignment to spend half a million at INBOUND24 (we did get commitment) Look - it seems ideal, but when everybody agrees it's often impractical and leads to poor outcomes. Here's 4 reasons why: 1) Consensus Can Lead to Mediocre Decisions: -> Explanation: Trying to please everyone can result in decisions that are watered down or lack boldness because they aim to accommodate all perspectives, even those that might not be in the best interest of the team or organization. -> Impact: This can stifle innovation and lead to compromise solutions that don’t fully address the core issues. 2) Consensus Slows Down Decision-Making: -> Explanation: Achieving consensus often takes a long time because it requires extensive discussions and negotiations to get everyone on board. -> Impact: This delay can hinder the team’s ability to respond quickly to challenges or opportunities, making them less competitive or effective. 3) Consensus Can Mask Lack of Commitment: -> Explanation: When decisions are made by consensus, some team members may agree outwardly but harbor private reservations, leading to a lack of genuine commitment to the decision. -> Impact: This can result in passive resistance, where team members don’t fully support or execute the decision, undermining the team’s success. 4) False Sense of Security: -> Explanation: Consensus can create a false sense of security, making it seem like everyone is on the same page when, in reality, there may be unresolved issues or unspoken dissent. -> Impact: This hidden discontent can surface later, causing problems in execution and team cohesion. Instead of striving for consensus, get commitment. This is where team members can express their opinions and debate issues openly. And once a decision is made, even if not everyone agrees, all team members should commit to it fully. This way, you ensure that decisions are made efficiently, with strong commitment, and without the compromises that often dilute consensus-based decisions. Don't put a high premium on consensus; it leads to worse outcomes in business. GREAT book on this is 5 Dysfunction of a Team. stay awesome & never stop believing P.S.
