Woke up tired this morning...And not just because we're in a mid-summer heatwave :) I woke up tired of seeing the same metrics for training. Granted. We track them too (see a typical customer below). So i'm not absolved of these conventional metrics either. But I'm still tired. Tired of seeing lose connections between training completion and "engagement". With no regard for the middle story. The one that pulls in who is not doing training and why. The training story that looks at reputation. And customer experience. And efficiency. Time to look beyond the numbers when it comes to training and ROI. Because the old conventions don't work. They don't tell a story. They don't actually show the impact of training on a business' bottom line. Frontline employees are the face of your brand. Their performance impacts "immediate productivity" while shaping customer experience and, ultimately, brand reputation. A few unconventional ROI metrics we should start considering when we talk about what good training looks like. Here are my top 3: 1. Customer Loyalty: Measuring guest sentiment through apps like Ovation and Tattle is key. Well-trained employees handle service interactions more effectively, which can lead to repeat business and enhanced customer satisfaction. Tie the two together. 2. Brand Reputation: Online Reviews and ratings can measure overall brand reputation as well as NPS and social media monitoring for mentions, hashtags, etc. Effective training ensures your employees represent your values and vision consistently. Certify them ambassadors through training and if the metrics above go up, your training is doing something right. 3. Sales Per Labor Hour ↔ Training Engagement: Every interaction an employee has with your brand is an opportunity for growth. "Employee engagement" as an isolated score means nothing. Tie it to SPLH. If they are divergent, something is wrong. If they are in sync, something is right. What unconventional metrics do you consider when evaluating the success of your training?
