In its first year, the Check Your Heart Act inspired more than 13,000 people to add their names to the Michigan Organ Donor Registry for the first time, and more than 170,000 more reaffirmed their decision to donate life. We are deeply grateful to the Michigan Association of CPAs (MICPA) for being valued partners in our mission to honor life through donation and for getting the word out that doing your taxes can help save lives. Workplace partnerships like we have with MICPA make initiatives like the Check Your Heart Act successful. Is your organization is interested in joining us as workplace partners? We honor life through donation.
About us
Our Core Purpose: We honor life through donation. Our Core Values: Determined, Compassionate, Professional Gift of Life is the state's only federally designated organ and tissue recovery program, providing all services necessary for organ donation to occur in Michigan. We're a non-profit organization working 24/7/365 as a liaison between donors, the state's hospitals and transplant centers. Gift of Life was incorporated in 1971 by Michigan transplant surgeons to provide a network for sharing kidneys. Today, Gift of Life recovers more than 900 organs every year for transplantation from 300 or more donors, saving hundreds of lives. Bone, skin and other tissue also is recovered from nearly 1,000 donors, helping to significantly improve the lives of thousands of seriously injured and sick recipients. Gift of Life also works with Eversight Michigan to facilitate cornea and eye donation. Additionally, Gift of Life maintains and grows the Michigan Organ Donor Registry in partnership with the Michigan Secretary of State. The registry is a confidential database of state residents who have expressed their desire to someday help others by becoming an organ, eye and tissue donor.

At a heartfelt gathering in Linden, Michigan, Gloria Kirshman and Carla Bussell met for the first time at Kirshman’s home. Both women share an extraordinary bond, having received life-saving organ transplants from the same donor on the same day. Kirshman, 69, who received a heart transplant, and Bussell, 52, who underwent a double lung transplant, were joined by the family of their donor, Suzanne Karrer. Suzanne’s selfless act not only gave Kirshman and Bussell a second chance at life, but it also created a lasting bond between the recipients and the donor’s family. 💻: https://lnkd.in/gGWfDZzP Register your decision to help save a life at golm.org/register. #DonateLife #CheckYourHeart

At the 2024 AOPO Annual Meeting, our President, Dorrie Dils, took the stage in a stunning pink suit, delivering a Barbie-themed President’s Address that resonated with all of us. Just as Barbie navigates a strange new world in the movie, OPOs are undergoing a significant transformation. Dorrie’s message was clear: together, “if we buckle up and buckle down,” we have the potential to “redefine our industry,” and save more lives through organ donation and transplantation. 📽️ Watch the full address on our YouTube channel: https://lnkd.in/eMB8akX7 💬 Check out the latest Donation Perspectives blog for some of our favorite quotes and highlights from Dorrie’s speech: https://lnkd.in/eXT_W45k #AOPOAM24 #AOPO50K #DonateLife #OrganDonation

Her message to our community was clear: together, we can save more lives through organ donation and transplantation. Dorrie’s powerful words: “If we buckle up and buckle down, I believe we as the Association of Organ Procurement Organizations have the power to make things right and save more lives. As Barbie says: “Magic happens when you believe in yourself.” And I believe in all of you. Let’s make some magic happen!” Stay tuned for Dorrie’s full address coming soon! #AOPOAM24 #AOPO50K
