Last week, I joined former Congressman and Under Secretary of the Army Patrick J. Murphy at The White House to advance #employment initiatives for service members and #veterans. As Task Force Movement Committee Chairman for Guard and Reserve Programs, I had the opportunity to share insights and perspectives into the technical world of #recruiting and career transition with an emphasis on #cyber and national security jobs.
I met with Jake Braun, Acting Principal National Cyber Director - The White House, and COL Jarrett Thomas, Director, U.S. Army Soldier For Life, to discuss ways that emerging United States Department of Defense talent technologies could soon integrate with private sector employment ecosystems to support career advancement for life. Without modern HR technologies and a deep understanding of the critical connection between military and civilian careers, we cannot sufficiently address problems driving our recruiting and retention crisis. Platforms such as #GigEagle, developed in partnership with Eightfold, the 75th U.S. Army Reserve Innovation Command, and the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), could one day serve as the connective tissue between military and civilian careers.
Some key problems we discussed:
- Need to further reduce barriers to hiring veterans who sometimes lack college degrees despite having tremendous real-world experience and expertise in the cyber domain.
- Too often, our nation’s thought leaders are focused on developing strategies without specific plans mapped to execution and funding.
- We are still decades behind in our adoption of critical HR technologies and career training resources.
- The national security implications are significant; entire sectors of our economy, such as critical infrastructure, lack modern #recruiting concepts, tools, and strategies.
Task Force Movement is unique in its approach to connecting national thought leaders with resources on the ground to enable execution. We were excited to launch Task Force Movement Illinois last month with support from the Governor’s Office to bring these national frameworks to the State level.
We also celebrated the 80th Anniversary of the GI Bill, one of the most significant investments in our service members in history!
