Congratulations to our board member, Nicole Noren, on her latest documentary with ESPN, Listen, which was just named a winner at the National Awards for Education Reporting! We're proud to have you on board with us.
We are so proud of our Girls Inc. of Greater Santa Barbara board member, Nicole Noren, for her outstanding work as Director on yet another award-winning documentary on campus gender violence. Her latest documentary with ESPN, Listen, was just named a winner at the National Awards for Education Reporting. Listen is an investigative documentary about Lauren McCluskey, University of Utah student-athlete, who repeatedly sought help as her ex-boyfriend stalked and harassed her. The people and the institutions responsible for listening to her and protecting her failed at every turn. Tragically, she was murdered. Investigative reporting and documentary filmmaking serve as potent forms of advocacy by uncovering hidden truths, amplifying marginalized voices, and catalyzing social change. Through in-depth research, compelling storytelling, and powerful visuals, they shed light on injustices, challenge power structures, and inspire action, driving towards a more informed and equitable society. Advocacy is a guiding tenant at Girls Inc., and we couldn’t be prouder of Nicole’s important work. Read more about Listen from Nicole’s perspective: https://lnkd.in/gbv6P85f

What becomes possible when we follow the lead of young people? Bravo, Oakland Youth Vote Coalition! https://lnkd.in/gTJbdSP4
OAKLAND YOUTH VOTE MINI-DOCUMENTARY NOW AVAILABLE! 🎉 The Oakland Youth Vote Coalition and youth organizers behind Measure QQ are excited to share the full video documenting their historic youth vote campaign. As you may recall, in 2020, Oakland youth harnessed their collective power to co-author youth vote legislation and rally voters behind Measure QQ, resulting in a resounding victory that allows 16 and 17 year-old Oaklanders to vote in school board elections. After three more years of additional organizing to ensure Measure QQ gets implemented, the Alameda County Board of Supervisors eventually instructed the Registrar of Voters to modify our election systems to accommodate 16 and 17-year-old voters by the November 2024 election. We have been working behind the scenes to ensure things are on the right track and are cautiously optimistic that Oakland youth will cast their first historic ballots in 2024! This journey was inspired by young peoples’ desire to find new ways to build and exercise their power. And though this is a local win, we hope this victory inspires others! The Oakland Youth Vote Coalition partner organizations have been working with youth leaders over the last few years to create a video that documents the origins of this campaign, the process to develop a youth vote policy, and strategies for how to organize a successful campaign. Our hope is that this campaign inspires others to explore new ways to build power in your particular terrain. Watch what youth have to say and join our movement to transform democracy by sharing the mini-documentary today! #OaklandYouthVote #TransformDemocracy
