#YouthGiveChampion Spotlight Ubaidullah Alhassan is not your typical third-year Pharmaceutical Sciences student at Kaduna, Nigeria—he is a changemaker with a heart for compassion, advocacy, and community service. While many focus on human-centered issues, Ubaidullah saw an overlooked need in his environment and took action. On his university campus, cats are a familiar sight in hostels and surrounding areas, yet no structured efforts were in place to care for their welfare. Instead of looking the other way, Ubaidullah decided to step up and make a difference. He founded Feed A Cat Today (FACT)—the first-ever student-led animal welfare club dedicated to ensuring that these animals are fed, cared for, and protected. Through FACT, Ubaidullah is not just helping animals; he is shaping a culture of kindness and responsibility among students. By creating awareness and mobilizing volunteers, he has inspired others to recognize their role in making the world a more compassionate place—one small act at a time. His initiative proves that generosity isn’t limited to just humans; it extends to all living beings that share our spaces. Philanthropy is having an existential moment. Should it fill the gaps left by disappearing government funding? Should it focus on urgent, stanch-the-bleeding interventions? Should it invest in long-term systemic change? Or should it wait and see what new systems emerge? The reality is that it will likely be some combination of these. But what feels most essential right now is the work being done in, and for, community. Specifically, locally driven, globally supported efforts—work that taps into networks, feedback loops, and new points of connection and cooperation. People of good intent are everywhere, willing to work across ideological lines. And within that group are the natural leaders, conveners, facilitators, and inspirers—the ones who start things, who invite others in, who create the conditions for meaningful change. These alliances of ordinary citizens can and will raise the ambient level of good faith, generosity, and social capital in their communities. They are the ones who need support—whether they are working within the 501(c)(3) system or movements or more informal structures. The work of rebuilding and reweaving won’t be led from the top down. It never has been. But: philanthropy could make a world-changing difference by supporting those bottom-up efforts--as robustly as possible.

  • Can volunteering ease feelings of loneliness?  A recent The New York Times article referred to volunteering as ‘an overlooked cure’, noting its potential to prevent or alleviate loneliness among adults.  Volunteers play an important role in bolstering social connections and adding to the safety net that helps people feel cared for. In delivering services and solutions to problems, they also provide a sense of optimism and hope and create a visible pathway for others to engage.   Please join us to discuss the impact of volunteering at ‘Volunteering: An Antidote to the Epidemic of Loneliness’ on Wednesday, April 9 starting at 9 a.m. EDT.  We’re glad to co-host this important discussion alongside Lejla Šehić Relić, founder and CEO of DKolektiv, Andrea Wigfield, Professor of Applied Social & Policy Research at Sheffield Hallam University, Casper Bo Danø, CEO of FriSe, and Nichole Cirillo, Executive Director of IAVE (International Association for Volunteer Effort).  Register here: https://bit.ly/4iNZukn

I'm looking forward to this webinar, since our loneliness epidemic is not getting better and not going to get better without intention. We're losing community, and community is everything: our solid ground, our safety net, our sense of self in relation to others. The connection between giving--this webinar will focus on volunteering, but it's true of all forms of giving-- and wellbeing, including strong bonds with others--is very real. If we're focusing on caring for others, we're strengthening the feeling of connection for everyone involved, and increasing our sense of our own agency. It awakens often latent awareness of our own power, broadens our conception of what it means to participate as a citizen of our communities and world, and combats cynicism. For nonprofits who rely on volunteers, this can be an important part of engagement. Creating a volunteer community which experiences these effects through their work with you will create a community of champions for your mission for a long time to come.

Loneliness is on the rise, with 25% more Americans feeling isolated today than before the pandemic. The World Health Organization calls it a global public health concern, linked to depression, heart disease, and early death. But there's hope: volunteering can be a powerful antidote to alleviate loneliness. Volunteers build social connections, offering care, optimism, and hope. Join our webinar to learn from experts about effective programs to combat loneliness. This weekend, in honor of International Women's Day, The Pad Party and It Takes a Village collected over 23,000 tampon and pad products and over $2,600 for our local food shelter. What started as a small "pad party" in Katrina Lehr-McKinney's living room has transformed into a movement to fight period poverty and build community around those in need. What better way to celebrate International Women's Day than standing alongside this rag tag group of ladies fighting to support women in need? 💪 Carmen Toft Lesli Olson Brienne Maner

Last week, the #GivingTuesday comms team put pen to postcard and wrote notes to seniors. This volunteer activity supports the work of Letters Against Isolation a nonprofit founded in 2020 by Shreya P. and Saffron Patel to fight senior loneliness. The 30 handwritten postcards will be distributed locally to help uplift spirits and spread a little joy. Through acts of generosity like this, we can make our world a better, more connected place. 🫶
