For the first time, fossil fuels in #BRICS countries will drop below half of total installed power capacity. 🌍 🔋 Wind and solar are leading the charge, with 1,550 GW in development—double the capacity of coal, oil, and gas. In 2024, 72 GW of fossil capacity is scheduled to come online, while 190 GW of non-fossil has already been added. Yet, fossil fuels still persist, with all BRICS countries (except Ethiopia) building new coal, oil, or gas plants. Discover more in our latest briefing: https://lnkd.in/eYj-Zkq4

Mexico and Argentina are planning significant #LNG export capacity expansions that could position #LatinAmerica as a major LNG exporting region. Mexico's buildout, largely reliant on gas from the U.S. Permian Basin, is estimated at US$54.3 billion, making it the third-largest slate of such projects globally, with a capacity of 73.6 million tonnes per annum (mtpa). Argentina is also advancing its LNG plans, with a proposed US$30 billion terminal that could significantly enhance the region’s export capabilities. However, these rapid expansions raise serious concerns about the region's energy future. With abundant renewable resources available, these investments risk locking Latin America into costly stranded assets and increasing exposure to volatile energy markets. Hats off to the collaboration between GEM's Anna Mowat and Joachim Kattrup at Danwatch. Great to see our work drive accountability and transparency in the fight against climate change.
How's your Friday going? It's high time to read something interesting 💡 & I have a very insightful suggestion for those, who are active in #greenbonds 🍃 & #sustainable bond investments 🍀 to check the latest research made by our dear friends & valued media partners Danwatch, written by Joachim Kattrup! It's always pleasant to see how our #CBONDS data on green bonds, just simple numbers turn into such interesting investigations! Forget everything you’ve read in your pension fund’s climate accounts! The actual CO2 emissions from their investments are far higher than what they claim! ☢ Read more here https://lnkd.in/ePsidC9M #green #greenbonds #sustainable #Cbonds #Danwatch #CO2emissions #pensionfunds #KKR #Blackstone #Blackrock, #Carlyle Group #AresManagement #Macquarie #ApolloManagement and #Brookfield #PensionDanmark

Private equity firms like Carlyle, Brookfield, and EIG are responsible for a staggering 1.17 gigatons of CO2 emissions annually. The new 2024 Private Equity Climate Risks Scorecard shows these firms are still deeply invested in fossil fuels, with 67% of their energy portfolios tied to coal, oil, and gas. Despite claims of sustainability, these firms are doubling down on dirty energy and exposing themselves—and their investors—to significant financial and climate risks. It’s time for transparency, accountability, and real climate action from private equity. https://lnkd.in/eSRiHyZG

The #UK is on the verge of entering its #coal-free era, as it shuts down its last remaining operating coal-fired power plant today. A significant milestone in the UK’s clean energy transition, the country is the first member of the #G7 to retire all its coal power. Still, as Christine Shearer tells Reuters today, "there is a lot of work to do... particularly in Japan, the U.S., and Germany" to meet phase-out commitments. https://lnkd.in/eVrAnbfy
