On World Ocean Day, GGGI’s Hannah Pragnell-Raasch was delighted to present on a panel moderated by Costa Rica’s Minister of Fisheries & Aquaculture at the pre-UNOC high-level event, Immersed In Change, to discuss #ghostgear best practices and the need for strong provisions in the #plasticstreaty. About us
The Global Ghost Gear Initiative (GGGI) is a cross-sectoral alliance committed to driving solutions to the problem of lost and abandoned fishing gear worldwide. The GGGI aims to improve the health of marine ecosystems, protect marine animals, and safeguard human health and livelihoods. Launched in September 2015 and founded on the best available science and technology, the GGGI is the first initiative dedicated to tackling the problem of ghost fishing gear at a global scale. The GGGI’s strength lies in the diversity of its participants including the fishing industry, the private sector, academia, governments, intergovernmental and non-governmental organisations. Every participant has a critical role to play to mitigate ghost gear locally, regionally and globally.

I'm excited to be in Ottawa for my third Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee for a global plastics treaty! Like my INCs past, Environmental Investigation Agency, OceanCare, Fundacion MarViva and Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) spent the first Sunday morning hosting discussions on a damaging source of marine plastic pollution - fishing gear! Throughout the highs and lows of past INC negotiations, working from the inception of fishing gear in the options for elements to draft options reflecting a comprehensive solution that strengthens governance across the life cycle of the material and product has been a joy. This is mostly due to the collaborative spirit and passionate individuals elevating discussions, sharing experiences and driving forward solutions. Thank you to all who attended the event and to all the folks who have been working on this issue - it was a great way to start a productive week of negotiations, and I hope that can carry forward for fishing gear and all provisions!
