🗣 Join us for a crucial discussion on ocean energy at the United Nations High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF): https://lnkd.in/e_UjDwsG Ocean Conservancy is hosting an official side event, "Climate Action through Ocean Energy: Concessional Finance for Sustainable Futures" on Tuesday, July 16. Energy is vital for sustainable development and achieving sustainable development goals. With the urgent need to transition away from fossil fuels, offshore wind energy offers a promising solution. However, the significant initial investment can be a barrier, especially for developing countries. This roundtable will bring together a cross-section of collaborators to discuss how concessional finance can overcome these barriers and drive investments in responsible offshore wind deployment. We will also share the recommendations from our latest report highlighting the need to increase the availability of concessional finance. 👏 These high school students are making a big impact on their local communities. 👏 In collaboration with our partners in South Florida, Debris Free Oceans and Big Blue & You, and funded by NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, our Plastic Free Cities program empowers high school students to work with local businesses to eliminate single-use plastics such as cups, plates and utensils, often replacing them with reusable or backyard compostable products. Natalia De Prisco, a Plastic Free Cities student from Doral, Florida, shared her experience with the program throughout the fall 2023 semester. Check it out and learn how YOU can make change in your area during #PlasticFreeJuly and all year long! https://lnkd.in/ekf6a83T

It's SO MUCH FUN seeing the high school kids in our Plastic Free Cities program speak out and use their voice as spokespeople - they're really, really good!!! Just watch them in this killer news story!!! Such a joy to watch Ocean Conservancy, Big Blue & You, Debris Free Oceans, and the NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration marine debris program partner together on this work. Special kudos to Maggie Winchester-Weiler for making this magic happen! And many thanks to both Louis and Anastasia for telling the story of these kids' efforts to clean up their community and our ocean.

🥒 Sea pickles 🪱 Sea worms 🔥 Fire bodies These are just a few nicknames for one of our ocean’s most mysterious creatures: pyrosomes. Pyrosomes may look like bizarre jellyfish at first glance, but these quirky critters are uniquely beautiful and play an important role in our ocean’s ecosystems and food web. We know exactly what it will take to address plastic pollution. Ocean Conservancy's Vice President of Conservation, Ocean Plastics Nicholas Mallos outlines these 3 (not-so-easy, but straightforward) steps: 1️⃣ Reduce. Cutting the amount of plastics—especially single-use plastics—that we produce is foundational. 2️⃣ Manage (collect and *actually* recycle.) We must push for policies that make recycling plastics easier, safer, more accessible and more effective, and that starts with requiring the plastics we use to be truly reusable and recyclable. 3️⃣ Clean up. Even when we achieve the most ambitious plastics reduction and management targets, we will still need to recover 40% of the plastics that pollute the ocean each year to reverse course.
