This week will be the biggest week for us and the Silkroad Innovation Hub! On Friday, October 25, we will host the first-ever technology conference about the Central Asia and Caucasus region — Central Eurasia @ Silicon Valley 2024! This will be the biggest conference about the region outside the region. We expect over 1,000 participants, 100 exhibiting startups, 100+ VCs, many top speakers and panelists, and countless new connections! The event will be held at the iconic Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco. The Customer Delusion: A Lesson for Entrepreneurs 💡 Imagine this: a young company with a passionate team and a dedicated founder pouring time into satisfying their first customers, refining their product, and providing nonstop support. 🙈 When asked, "How much are they paying you?" the response is, "Actually, they aren't paying anything yet. But we're confident they will once we prove our value." Sound familiar? 🤔 And there it is — the delusion. Like many new entrepreneurs, this founder believed they had success because someone was using their product. However, users who don't pay are not true customers; they are testers or fans. Failing to recognize this can lead to disappointment when trying to convert them into paying customers. 🚫 The Delusion of Traction One of the most dangerous traps for early-stage entrepreneurs is believing they have traction by giving away free products. The eagerness to show progress often results in wasted effort, hoping that free users will eventually pay. Unfortunately, this belief is a mirage. The difference between someone using your product for free and someone paying is significant. Think about all the free services you use; would you stick around if you had to pay for them tomorrow? 🔄 Yet, the founder can caught in this mindset, viewing free users as a step towards paid customers, not realizing they need to sell. 💼 The Challenge of Selling Selling can be intimidating. It makes entrepreneurs vulnerable to rejection, making them reluctant to ask for payment. They often cling to the idea that giving their product away for free demonstrates its value. However, this only postpones the realization that they confuse mere interest with genuine commitment. If you're not selling, you're not building a business. A good product or great idea isn’t enough; active attempts to convert users into paying customers are essential. 🤔 For founders stuck in this mentality, it’s time to reflect. Ask yourself, why aren’t you asking for money? If a potential customer isn't willing to pay now, what makes you think they will later? 📝 Key Takeaways Be honest about your process stage. If you're still testing, great! Just don't confuse testers with customers. Real traction comes when people willingly pay for your product. If asking for payment feels uncomfortable, remember: the worst that can happen is a "no."
