The Gold Foundation is a healthcare-related 501 (c)(3) with a small staff, yet wide and influential reach in the healthcare industry. The Foundation works to ensure that healthcare professionals provide patient care that is as compassionate as it is technologically sophisticated. We are well known across the U.S. in academic medical education as change agents and have more recently been extending our programs and strategies into nursing education as well as to all the places where care is delivered. Our Mission: The Gold Foundation champions humanism in healthcare, which we define as compassionate, collaborative, and scientifically excellent care. This Gold standard of care embraces all and targets barriers to such care. We empower experts, learners, and leaders to together create systems and cultures that support humanistic care for all. We have embarked on a multi-year strategic plan to expand and grow our footprint, which includes continuing and extending our work with medical and nursing education, corporate partners, foundations, hospitals, and community health centers to ensure that humanistic, compassionate, and co-produced healthcare is implemented systemically. The Gold Foundation has a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and anti-racism, values rooted in our mission of humanism in healthcare for all. Check out this shift from using Gold Foundation's Tell Me More communications tool — before, only 28% of healthcare professionals surveyed strongly agreed "I know my patients very well." After using Tell Me More to connect with patients, 48% strongly agreed they knew their patients very well. Plus, the percentage of healthcare professionals surveyed who strongly agreed with "My patients know me very well" rose from 28% to 64%. This new study in the Journal of Patient Experience includes more interesting findings around the impact of Tell Me More at Northwell Health and Donald & Barbara Zucker School of Medicine, which are both Gold Partners Council members. Thanks to study authors Bryana Belin, Ishi Aron, Shyam Bhagat, Taranjeet Ahuja, and Alice Fornari for adding to the evidence around this simple and powerful tool. Gold Co-Founder and Trustee Dr. Sandra Gold gave the keynote speech, sharing three messages with the class of 2028. She was introduced by Gold President and CEO Kathleen Reeves, MD, FAAP. We are grateful to Dean Robert Johnson MD, FAAP, and all the faculty for their partnership in humanism, including being the second school in the nation to host a White Coat Ceremony with the Gold Foundation back in 1994. Sometimes I get sad reading all these messages on LI about what's wrong with healthcare. Posting to share a story of what's right with healthcare. A few days ago I was on shift in the hospital and took care of a patient who had been down a long road. She had been hospitalized with sepsis (life threatening bloodstream infection) and developed complications including getting a pneumonia, being put on a ventilator, developing sepsis again, and having liver complications from the medicines we needed to treat her other illnesses. It was day 67 when I was caring for her and it was a weekend. One of her goals she told me was to 'do human stuff' like eat by herself and walk. But here she was still requiring a ventilator machine to support her lungs 24/7. Weekends are a time where hospitals don't have as many extra hands, and some services take longer to get, including physical therapy. So, the nurses and the respiratory therapists hatched a plan, and at 11am they all went in and slowly but surely surrounded the patient still, on the ventilator, and helped her stand up from the side of the bed for the first time. You know is right with healthcare? This display of humanism and teamwork that I witnessed. For those of us in leadership positions, lets help create more opportunities for teamwork like this.
